Chapter 8 - The Cornered Wolf

By Thursday afternoon, the walls began closing in on Reid Vance, and like any cornered predator, he turned on the weakest member of his pack.

I was in the training yard working a two-year-old German Shepherd named Blitz through an agility obstacle when my personal phone rang.

It was Sarah Bennett.

"Grant, you need to hear this," Sarah said without preamble. "I just received a call from Marcus Sterling. He has officially withdrawn as Claire’s counsel."

I stopped Blitz with a hand signal. "Why?"

"Because Vance stopped paying his retainer," Sarah said, her voice crackling with intensity. "The moment we served Vance’s corporate counsel with the subpoena based on that thumb drive you found, Vance severed all ties with Claire. He kicked her out of the Omni Hotel suite, canceled the credit card he gave her, and his security team escorted her off his corporate premises this morning."

"Where is she now?"

"She’s at a cheap motel off Interstate 35," Sarah said. "And she’s terrified. Sterling told me off the record that Claire is ready to talk. She realizes Vance played her. The Belize wire? Vance’s offshore trustee transferred that $175,000 into an escrow account under his exclusive control twenty minutes after it cleared. Claire doesn't have a dime. She’s facing felony child neglect charges from the DA, federal wire fraud exposure, and she has no money, no lawyer, and no friends."

"She made her bed," I said coldly.

"Yes, she did," Sarah agreed. "But her desperation is our leverage. The assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma is extremely interested in the construction kickbacks detailed in Claire’s notebook. If Claire signs a full sworn deposition detailing Vance’s extortion, his coercion regarding the children, and his embezzlement scheme, the federal prosecutor is willing to execute an emergency asset forfeiture freeze against Vance’s commercial accounts."

"Which means?"

"Which means we recover the $175,000," Sarah said. "Every single cent of your equity line will be seized back from Vance’s accounts before he can launder it through Panama."

"What does Claire want in return?" I asked, knowing my wife never did anything without an angle.

"She wants to see the kids," Sarah said quietly. "She’s begging for a supervised visit. She claims she wants to apologize to Tessa."

A heavy silence settled over the line. Blitz sat at my feet, his tongue lolling out in the Oklahoma heat, waiting for my command.

"No," I said.

Sarah paused. "Grant, legally, if she cooperates—"

"I don't care about the money that much, Sarah," I said, my voice shaking with raw, protective fury. "Tessa spent the last five nights sleeping on the floor next to Miles’s crib because she’s terrified her mother will come back and make her carry that baby until her bones break. Tessa is nine years old. She is finally beginning to breathe again. I will not parade my traumatized daughter in front of Claire so Claire can get a lighter federal sentence."

"Understood," Sarah said, her tone firm and supportive. "I’ll tell the U.S. Attorney that Claire’s testimony must be secured without contact with the children as a precondition. We hold all the cards now anyway. The thumb drive you found contains Vance’s unencrypted digital signatures. We don't even need Claire’s goodwill; the feds have enough to issue an indictment based on the physical documents alone."

"Let them do it," I said.

Two hours later, the drama took a dangerous, erratic turn.

I was inside the kennel prep room measuring out raw meat rations when the front gate intercom buzzed frantically.

I walked over to the security monitor mounted on the wall.

Parked outside the gate wasn't an Aston Martin. It was a battered yellow taxi.

Standing at the steel gate, gripping the bars with both hands, was Claire.

Her designer clothes were wrinkled and stained. Her hair was tangled, her mascara smeared across her hollow, pale cheeks. She looked like a ghost that had crawled out of a shipwreck.

"Grant!" her voice screamed through the intercom speaker, shrill, cracked, and completely unhinged. "Grant, please! Open the gate! He’s going to kill me! Reid knows I took the notebook! Please, let me in!"
