Chapter 1 - The Impact on the Marble

The sound of Khloe’s body striking the cold, unyielding marble steps of the county courthouse was a sickening thud that silenced the midday crowd instantly. The September air was crisp, carrying the sharp scent of turning leaves and city exhaust, but in a fraction of a second, Khloe’s world shrank to the jagged edges of stone, the violent tearing sensation across her abdomen, and the suffocating terror of losing the child she had carried for thirty-two weeks.
She had tumbled down five steep steps before her shoulder slammed against the heavy bronze handrail at the landing. Her purse had burst open, scattering ultrasound printouts, prenatal vitamin bottles, and legal filings across the blood-spattered stone.
“My baby!” Khloe shrieked, her voice scraping raw against the vaulted granite pillars of the courthouse facade. She curled her body inward instinctively, tucking her chin toward her chest, wrapping both trembling hands over the hard swell of her pregnant belly. “Please, God, no! My baby!”
At the top of the grand staircase, Vanessa Cole stood frozen for a single, terrified second. Her designer sunglasses had slipped down her nose, revealing wide, panicked eyes. She had lunged forward in a fit of spiteful rage after the preliminary divorce mediation hearing inside had gone catastrophically against her and Richard. She had shoved Khloe with both hands, hissing that Khloe was an anchor ruining Richard’s life.
Beside Vanessa stood Richard Vance—Khloe’s husband of four years, a man who had built his real estate empire using the startup capital provided by Khloe’s family. He wore a tailored charcoal suit and a platinum watch that Khloe had given him for their third anniversary.
When Khloe fell, Richard had not moved.
He had not shouted. He had not reached out his arm. He had simply stood beside his mistress, his hands half-in his pockets, watching his heavily pregnant wife tumble down the stone steps with the cold, detached curiosity of a man watching an inconvenient obstacle get swept away by the wind.
Then, the heavy glass doors of the courthouse entrance blasted outward.
Harrison Miller, Khloe’s older brother, burst onto the terrace like an incoming artillery shell. He had been five paces behind them, delayed by the metal detectors as he collected their coats.
He saw Khloe curled on the landing. He saw the blood pooling through the fabric of her cream-colored maternity dress. And he saw Richard and Vanessa standing at the summit of the stairs, unmoving.
Harrison did not hesitate. His face darkened into a mask of pure, homicidal fury. He charged across the granite terrace, his heavy work boots striking the stone with thunderous force.
Richard barely had time to turn his head before Harrison’s right fist connected flush with his jaw.
The crack of bone and cartilage echoed across the plaza. Richard was lifted clean off his feet, his body spinning sideways before crashing violently onto the stone landing, his head bouncing against the marble with a dull crack. Blood immediately sprayed from his split lip, staining his pristine white collar.
“You coward!” Harrison roared, his voice shaking the glass windows above them. “You watched your mistress attack my sister?!”
Vanessa let out a piercing shriek, dropping her leather handbag and turning to bolt back toward the security doors. But Harrison moved with predatory speed. He lunged forward, his large, calloused hand clamping around her upper arm like a vice. With a single, savage twist, he forced her downward, slamming her knees onto the very same jagged steps where Khloe had fallen.
“Get off me! Richard, help me!” Vanessa screamed, clawing at Harrison’s fingers with manicured nails.
Richard, groaning on the ground, spit out a mouthful of blood and staggered to his feet, driven by wounded pride. He lunged at Harrison from behind, his arms flailing wildly. “Get your hands off her, Harrison! She didn't mean to—'”
Harrison didn't even turn his entire body. He ducked under Richard’s clumsy swing, drove his shoulder into Richard’s chest, and followed with a devastating left hook that caught Richard directly under the ear. Richard collapsed backward down the stairs, tumbling three steps before coming to a dead stop, groaning in the fetal position as his nose gushed crimson across his designer lapel.
“Sheriff's department! Nobody move! Get on the ground right now!”
Four armed courthouse deputies burst through the exterior doors, weapons drawn, taser prongs leveled. Pedestrians, attorneys, and clerical staff who had witnessed the entire confrontation stood frozen in a wide circle, shouting warnings.
Harrison raised both hands immediately, though he kept one heavy boot planted firmly on Vanessa’s coat hem, pinning her to the stone.
Khloe lifted her head from the landing, her face pale, tears cutting through the marble dust on her cheeks. She pointed a trembling, bloodstained finger straight up at Vanessa.
“She pushed me,” Khloe gasped out, her voice trembling with agony as another violent contraction seized her abdomen. “She grabbed me from behind and threw me down the stairs! She tried to kill my baby!”
A chorus of voices from the crowd rose instantly to back her up.
“She did!” shouted a woman in a business suit holding a legal folder. “I saw it from the revolving doors! That blonde woman shoved her with both hands while that man stood there and did nothing!”
“Arrest them!” an older attorney yelled from the plaza. “It was premeditated aggravated assault on a pregnant woman!”
The lead deputy holstered his weapon and barked orders. Within seconds, two deputies had forced Vanessa’s arms behind her back, the sharp, metallic click of handcuffs locking into place over her wrists as she wept hysterical, incoherent excuses. Richard was rolled onto his stomach, pinned by a deputy’s knee, and cuffed while he choked on his own blood, muttering threats about lawsuits that nobody cared to hear.
The wail of approaching sirens sliced through the city streets. An ambulance tore around the corner, mounting the sidewalk curb as paramedics leaped from the back carrying a trauma stretcher, neck collars, and a fetal monitoring kit.
Harrison dropped to his knees beside Khloe, completely ignoring the armed deputies who kept their eyes on him. He peeled off his heavy woolen jacket, bundling it under her head, and took both of her cold, trembling hands in his.
“I’ve got you, Khlo,” Harrison choked out, his eyes shining with unshed tears, his large thumbs gently wiping the dust from her forehead. “Look at me. Look at my eyes. Breathe with me.”
“Harrison... it hurts so bad,” she wept, clutching his sleeves with white-knuckle desperation. “The baby isn't kicking. Harrison, please, make him kick!”
The paramedics swarmed them, strapping a blood pressure cuff onto her arm while a female paramedic applied a portable Doppler probe to Khloe’s abdomen. For five agonizing seconds, the only sound on the courthouse steps was the hiss of city traffic and the static of the radio.
Then, through the speaker of the Doppler monitor, came the rapid, rhythmic, mechanical gallop of a fetal heartbeat.
Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
Khloe let out a shattered, sobbing breath, closing her eyes as the tears poured freely down her temples.
May you like
Harrison leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers. He looked over her shoulder at the two deputies hauling a bruised, handcuffed Richard and a sobbing Vanessa into the back of two separate patrol cruisers.
“They’ll never touch you again, Khloe,” Harrison whispered, his voice vibrating with an iron promise that chilled the air around them. “I swear to you on our mother's grave. They are going to pay for every single drop of blood you spilled today.”
