Chapter 6 - The Visitor in the Holding Ward

The subterranean detention ward of the Westchester County Department of Correction in Valhalla smelled of industrial floor wax, cold concrete, and bitter, rotting pride.

Vanessa Mercer sat on the edge of a stainless-steel cot bolted to the wall, wearing an oversized orange institutional jumpsuit.

Her manicured acrylic nails had been chipped down to the quick; her styled hair was unwashed, hanging in stringy tangles across her pale, sallow face. Her wrists and ankles were secured with heavy steel transport chains.

The heavy steel slider door buzzed open with a loud hydraulic clank.

Eleanor Mercer walked into the cell.

I did not hurry. My leather heels clicked rhythmically against the concrete with a slow, deliberate cadence. I wore an elegant camel-hair coat over my charcoal suit, my posture commanding, sovereign, and entirely unbothered.

Vanessa flinched back against the concrete wall, her bloodshot eyes widening in a mixture of feral hatred and visceral terror.

"You came to gloat," Vanessa spat, her voice cracking into a dry, hoarse rasp.

"I came to look at you, Vanessa," I said softly, stopping three paces from the cot. "I wanted to see what thirty-one years of maternal sacrifice looked like when the mask was finally stripped away."

"You ruined my life!" Vanessa hissed, leaping to her feet, her transport chains rattling violently against the steel belt around her waist. "I was going to be a partner at Sterling Capital! I was going to control forty-two million dollars! You kept me trapped in this provincial logistics company, making me audit freight manifests while my friends were running hedge funds in Manhattan!"

"You weren't trapped, Vanessa," I replied, my amber eyes locking onto hers with freezing clarity. "You were protected. You had a seven-figure trust fund, a five-acre estate waiting for you, and a seat at a table that took forty years of honest labor to build. But you didn't want to build. You wanted to steal."

I reached into my coat pocket, pulling out a copy of the morning's unsealed federal grand jury indictment.

I dropped the heavy document onto the steel cot.

"Julian Sterling signed a full plea-allocution at sunrise, Vanessa," I said. "He detailed every offshore transaction, every forged medical affidavit, and the fact that you planned to commit me to a closed psychiatric sanitarium in New Jersey after forcing my signature on the cellar floor."

Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked down at the thirty-four felony counts listed on the parchment, her hands shaking so violently that the paper fluttered against her knees.

"Julian... confessed?" she whispered, her voice finally breaking into a pathetic, terrified whimper.

"Julian saved himself, Vanessa," I answered quietly. "Just as you tried to save yourself at my feet. The Sterling private equity fund has been dismantled by the federal receivership, and your legal defense trust has a balance of zero."

Vanessa collapsed onto the cot, burying her face in her cuffed hands, weeping with the raw, ugly agony of a woman who had realized that her vanity had left her completely alone in the dark.

"Mom... please," she sobbed through her fingers. "I'm your daughter... Arthur’s daughter... you can't leave me in this cage..."

I looked at the woman on the cot.

The grief that had torn through my heart on the cold concrete floor of Mercer House was gone forever, replaced by the deep, eternal serenity of a mother who had finally set down a burden she was never meant to carry alone.

"Arthur’s daughter would have stood between the vulnerable and the fire, Vanessa," I whispered softly. "You chose to become the arsonist. And now you must answer to the law."

I turned my back on the broken girl.

May you like

"Guard," I called out.

The heavy steel door slid open, and I walked down the echoing corridor into the bright morning sunshine of Westchester, leaving Vanessa Mercer to weep in the concrete shadows where she would remain for a very long time.
