Chapter 4 - The Takedown at Sky Harbor

At 6:45 p.m., the private aviation terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was bustling with executive departures.

Inside the VIP lounge of Hangar 4, Julian Vance stood by the floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass overlooking the tarmac, dressed in an expensive camel-hair coat over a tailored charcoal suit, checking his gold Cartier watch with growing irritation.

Beside him sat Martha Cole—the unlicensed private nurse who had managed Ethan’s sedation—holding a leather medical transport bag and two newly minted fraudulent Costa Rican entry visas.

"Where is the transport van, Martha?" Julian snapped, pacing across the polished terrazzo floor. "The pilot filed the flight plan twenty minutes ago. If the boy isn't loaded before seven o'clock, the customs tower will flag our departure window."

"The driver said traffic was backed up on the I-10 corridor, Julian," Martha answered nervously, smoothing her skirt. "He'll be here."

The heavy double glass doors of the private hangar terminal were suddenly blown open by four armed federal marshals in dark tactical windbreakers, followed by six uniformed Phoenix police officers.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move! Hands in the air!"

Julian Vance sprang from his leather armchair, reaching instinctively inside his coat, but before his fingers could touch his pocket, Detective Marcus Thorne and two tactical operators slammed him face-first onto the marble coffee table.

CRASH.

Crystal glasses shattered across the stone as Julian’s arms were pulled behind his back.

CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy steel handcuffs ratcheted shut around his wrists.

Arthur Ross stepped through the entrance, impeccably dressed in his bespoke three-piece suit, holding an unsealed, red-tabbed federal dossier stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona.

"Julian Vance, Martha Cole," Arthur Ross announced, his deep baritone carrying the cold, sovereign finality of an iron vault door closing. "You are formally served with federal arrest warrants issued under Cause Number 26-CR-9914."

Julian twisted his face against the glass, screaming in wild, red-faced fury: "On what authority? I am a controlling trustee of Vance-Brooks Engineering! You have no legal standing to seize private charter passengers!"

"You are not a passenger, Julian," Marcus Thorne stated with freezing clinical detachment. "You are being charged with forty-eight counts of federal kidnapping, enterprise extortion under the RICO Act, grand testamentary fraud, and child endangerment."

Arthur Ross stepped forward, dropping a tablet onto the table right in front of Julian’s eyes.

The screen illuminated with a live video feed from the pediatric trauma center at Phoenix Children's Hospital:

Ethan Brooks, sitting up in a clean hospital bed, eating a bowl of warm chicken soup, holding his father’s hand with his right fingers, while seven-year-old Lily Carter sat on the edge of the mattress showing him her drawing of a fox.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The color drained from his face in a single, catastrophic wave, leaving his skin the sallow, grayish shade of wet drywall.

"The notebook..." Julian whispered, his voice disintegrating into pure, unvarnished horror.

"The notebook is in federal evidence, Julian," Arthur Ross said quietly. "And you will spend the rest of your life answering for every page."
