Chapter 7 - The Lake Shore Restoration

Three months later, the bitter chill of the Chicago winter had finally broken, chased away by the bright, golden warmth of an early spring thaw.

On Lake Shore Drive, the grand historic Vale estate—a sprawling, three-story limestone French Renaissance chateau built in 1892—stood gleaming against the azure backdrop of Lake Michigan.

Scaffolding that had covered the western facade for six months had been dismantled, revealing meticulously restored hand-carved limestone cornices, soaring slate mansard roofs, and leaded glass bay windows that caught the afternoon sunlight like diamonds.

Inside the grand central conservatory, the air was warm, scented with blooming white jasmine, damp potting soil, and fresh beeswax polish.

Emma stood on a wooden stepladder, wearing a pair of comfortable denim overalls over a gray cotton shirt, her dark hair pinned up in a loose, messy bun. In her hand, she held a specialized brass scraper, carefully removing a final layer of twentieth-century varnish from the intricate floral carvings of an antique oak archway.

Footsteps sounded softly against the imported parquet floor.

Emma looked down from the ladder.

Adrian stood at the base, dressed in an unbuttoned white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms and dark trousers. He held a silver tray bearing two tall glasses of fresh lemonade and a plate of warm, cinnamon-dusted pastries.

"The master architect is working through lunch again," Adrian murmured, looking up at her with that deep, unreserved warmth that had become the permanent climate of their private life.

Emma smiled, setting her brass tool down on the top step of the ladder. "The archivist in me refuses to leave an eighteenth-century rosette covered in polyurethane, Mr. Vale. It’s an ethical offense."

"Then allow me to negotiate a temporary ceasefire, Mrs. Vale," Adrian replied, setting the tray on a nearby marble console and extending his hands up toward her. "The state historical trust called ten minutes ago. They just designated the entire estate a protected national landmark."

Emma’s face lit up with a brilliant, breathless joy. She descended the ladder, placing her hands into his, allowing him to lift her effortlessly down onto the floor, pulling her flush against his chest.

"They approved the landmark status?" she asked, her eyes dancing.

"Unanimously," Adrian smiled, his hands resting securely around her waist. "Which means that under federal preservation covenants, no developer, no municipal council, and no corporate syndicate can ever touch a single stone of this property for the next century."

Emma let out a long, contented sigh, wrapping her arms around his neck, resting her forehead against his chin.

"We built a fortress, Adrian," she whispered.

"No, Emma," Adrian corrected gently, his lips brushing against hers in a slow, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet lemons and spring sunshine. "You built a sanctuary. I just provided the stone."
