Chapter 4 - The Removal of the Intruders

Judge Thomas Sterling—Julian’s father—stood up from Table Two.

The seventy-two-year-old federal jurist, a man whose integrity was revered across New England, adjusted his dark spectacles and walked slowly toward Table One. His heavy steps echoed with the authority of an unyielding court.

"David," Judge Sterling said, his deep baritone carrying across the hall without the microphone. "For five years, you have sat in my club in Boston, boasting of your family values, your corporate leadership, and your devotion to your daughter. You asked for my blessing to welcome Emily into our home."

David turned to the judge, his hands trembling as he reached out in a pathetic, pleading gesture. "Thomas... please. This is a personal matter... the messages were taken out of context by a bitter spouse—"

"The context is displayed on eighty-foot digital screens in front of two hundred witnesses, sir," Judge Sterling interrupted, his eyes hard as flint. "You brought your mistress to your daughter’s wedding, you attempted to humiliate the woman who built your career, and you embezzled trust funds from a corporate entity under federal regulatory oversight."

Judge Sterling looked toward the entrance where two armed private security bailiffs from the Hayes Foundation stood waiting.

"Officers," Judge Sterling said calmly. "Please escort this woman from the premises immediately. If she resists, have the State Police process her for commercial fraud and criminal trespass."

Melissa didn't wait for the guards to touch her.

She snatched her designer clutch from the table, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated humiliation, and fled down the center aisle of the ballroom, her ice-blue silk wrap trailing behind her like a tattered flag. Her high heels clattered frantically against the marble as several guests openly pulled their chairs back to avoid brushing her hem.

David lunged forward, his voice cracking into a desperate shriek. "Melissa! Wait!"

He spun around to face Emily, falling to his knees on the white floral runner, his manicured hands reaching for the lace hem of her wedding gown.

"Emily... sweetheart... please," David wept, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. "I made a terrible mistake! I was confused! The pressure of the merger was destroying my judgment! Think of our family! Think of your father!"

Emily looked down at the man on his knees.

There was no hatred in her eyes. There was only the cold, impenetrable finality of a woman who had completely outgrown a lie.

"My father died the moment he decided his vanity was worth more than my mother's dignity," Emily whispered softly.

She turned to Captain Davies.

"Remove his chair from my table," Emily commanded. "And tell the gate security that David Mercer’s vehicle is to be towed from the estate grounds."

Two private security officers stepped forward, gently but firmly taking David by his arms, hauling the broken executive to his feet, and guiding him through the double mahogany doors into the freezing evening rain.
