Chapter 5 - The Quiet Morning

The sun rose over the eastern suburbs the next morning, painting the sky in soft strokes of peach and lavender.

For the first time in thirty years, I woke up in my own king-sized bed—not in the sprawling marital mansion in Westchester, but in the sun-drenched penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park that my father had quietly deeded to me in my maiden name three days before the wedding.

The air was quiet. No frantic phone calls from David. No whispered arguments behind closed doors. No lingering anxiety about keeping up appearances for a man who didn't value my existence.

I walked out onto the balcony holding a mug of dark roast coffee, breathing in the crisp autumn air. Below me, the city was waking up, its endless rhythm moving forward with indifferent grace.

My phone buzzed on the iron patio table.

I picked it up. It was a text message from an unknown number.

From: David. Text: Please, Helen. Let’s talk. Melissa is gone. She cleaned out my personal checking account and left me with the foreclosure notices. I have nothing left. Please.

I stared at the screen for three seconds.

Then I pressed my thumb against the screen, blocked the number permanently, and tossed the phone back onto the table.

Karma wasn't a concept; it was an accountant with a federal subpoena.
