Chapter 4 - The Midnight Desperation

Rain lashed against the leaded glass windows of Eleanor’s pre-war apartment on the Upper East Side. It was 2:15 AM.

I couldn't sleep. The nursery in our penthouse on 72nd Street was full of hand-painted murals and soft cashmere blankets that I would never bring my daughter home to. My mother had sent two burly paralegals and a private moving crew to the penthouse four hours ago to retrieve my personal documents, jewelry, and clothing. They had reported that Grant was not there; the apartment was empty, strewn with half-packed suitcases and spilled scotch.

I stood in Eleanor’s library, wearing a soft wool robe, sipping chamomile tea that did nothing to quell the acid churning in my stomach. Beneath my ribs, Clara was restless, shifting in long, rolling waves that tightened my abdomen.

A soft buzz vibrated against the mahogany desk.

It was my personal phone. An unknown number.

I hesitated, then answered, putting it on speaker. "Yes?"

"Evelyn."

The voice was hollow, raspy, stripped of all the polished charm Grant had worn like expensive cologne for five years. He was breathing heavily, the background hum of a high-speed vehicle audible behind him.

"Grant," I said, my voice dead flat. "This call is being recorded by Vance & Associates."

"Don't give me that lawyer bullshit, Evelyn!" he snapped, his voice suddenly spiking into hysteria. "You weren't at the penthouse. Where are you? Are you with Mercer? Did you go to Daniel?"

"Where I am is no longer your concern."

"It *is* my concern!" he shouted. The sound of rain beating against a windshield poured through the speaker. "You have no idea what you've done. You think Daniel Mercer is some white knight coming to save you? He’s a monster! He’s been trying to take Whitaker Hospitality from me for two years! He used Paige—"

"He used Paige?" I interrupted, a sharp, cold laugh escaping my lips. "Did Daniel force you to take her to St. Barts in February while I was in the hospital with hyperemesis? Did Daniel forge your signature on the wire transfers to Holloway Holdings?"

A suffocating silence fell over the line. Grant’s ragged breathing was the only sound.

"Evelyn," he whispered, changing tactics, his voice softening into the wheedling, manipulative cadence he had used every time he had forgotten an anniversary or overdrawn an account. "Sweetheart. Please. I made a mistake. A terrible, disgusting mistake. Paige was a distraction—she meant nothing to me. You know how the pressure gets to me. My father’s shadow, the lenders breathing down my neck... I was weak. But it’s you. It’s always been you and Clara."

"Do not say her name."

"She’s my daughter!"

"She is an accessory to you," I spat, the rage finally cracking through my frozen exterior. "She was your insurance policy. You thought having a pregnant wife would keep the board docile and paint you as a stable family man while you ran your father's life's work into the dirt."

"Listen to me!" Grant snarled, the mask slipping instantly. "If you don't show up tomorrow and sign the Miami authorization, we lose everything! Do you hear me? Everything! The creditors will seize the brownstone. They’ll seize your mother’s trust assets. Celeste will be out on the street!"

"Celeste has an eight-million-dollar trust fund in Switzerland that your father set up to protect her from your stupidity," I said coldly. "She won't be on the street. But you will be."

"I am the CEO of Whitaker Hospitality!"

"Until 9:00 AM tomorrow," I said.

"If you walk into that boardroom with Daniel Mercer," Grant hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous register, "I will destroy you in court, Evelyn. I will claim you were unstable. I will take Clara from you before she takes her first breath. You will never hold her. I swear to God, I will spend every dollar I have left to make sure you never see our daughter."

The line clicked. He hung up.

My hands were shaking. Not with fear, but with a primal, violent fury that made my skin burn.

"Threatening custody," a voice murmured from the doorway.

My mother stood there, wrapped in a silk dressing gown, her legal notepad already open in her hand. Her face was dark with cold, procedural wrath.

"Did you get the recording?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.

Eleanor tapped her phone screen. "Uploaded to three secure cloud servers and delivered to the senior family court judge on duty. If Grant Whitaker comes within five hundred feet of you or the delivery room, he will be arrested for felony harassment and custodial intimidation."

She walked over, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "Drink your tea, Evelyn. Tomorrow, we take his kingdom."
