Chapter 8 - The Final Settlement

By afternoon, the eviction was complete.
The luxury cars in the driveway had been towed away. The designer wardrobes had been bagged and dumped on the front lawn. The sparkling jewelry boxes had been emptied and locked inside the secure transport vehicles of the Escalante legal team.
Andrew, Margaret, and Brenda stood huddled together on the sidewalk outside the wrought-iron gates of the estate, surrounded by garbage bags of their remaining personal belongings, while curious neighbors peeked through their curtains at the fallen dynasty.
I stood on the second-story balcony of the master bedroom, looking down through the glass panes at the pathetic little group on the street.
My father stepped out onto the balcony beside me, handing me a fresh cup of coffee.
“The bankruptcy filings have been processed,” Fernando said quietly. “Harrison Enterprises will be liquidated by Friday. Within a month, there won't even be a corporate record left bearing their name.”
“Good,” I said, taking a sip of the warm, dark liquid.
“What about you, my daughter?” Fernando asked, looking at me with deep, abiding affection. “Now that the house is cleared, what will you do?”
I looked out over the sprawling estate—the gardens, the marble fountains, the wide horizon of the city where I had tested the limits of human cruelty and emerged unburned.
“I’m going back to work, Father,” I smiled, touching the faint bruise on my cheek. “Only this time, I won't be hiding in the shadows.”

Down on the sidewalk, Andrew looked up, catching sight of me standing on the balcony. He raised a trembling hand, opening his mouth to scream an obscenity, but a private security guard stepped into his line of sight, blocking him out entirely.
He turned away, hoisting a plastic garbage bag over his shoulder, and began walking down the empty street toward the highway—a man who had inherited an empire built on borrowed power, only to watch it collapse the moment its true owner decided to breathe.
