Chapter 8 - The Dominoes Fall

The federal raid on Sterling Logistics was swift, brutal, and utterly comprehensive.
Within ninety minutes, federal cybercrime specialists had mirrored the primary executive mainframes, downloading every encrypted file, email thread, and international wire receipt directly onto secure DOJ drives. The digital evidence didn't just implicate Marcus Vance in the embezzlement scheme; it contained recorded phone calls between Marcus and the Playa del Carmen security firm discussing the "termination" of David Vance and Sarah Jenkins once the audit logs were successfully downloaded.
Marcus Vance was arrested right at his mahogany desk, his tailored suit jacket pulled off as heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. As the federal marshals hauled him past the floor-to-ceiling windows of his forty-second-floor office, his face was pale, his eyes wide with the horrifying realization that his empire of glass had just shattered.
The media frenzy was immediate. By evening, news outlets across the country were broadcasting the downfall of Sterling Logistics. Headlines flashed across television screens: “Billionaire CEO Marcus Vance Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Pension Embezzlement and Murder-For-Hire Conspiracy.”
I sat in my living room, watching the news broadcast on mute, sipping a cup of herbal tea. The house was quiet, safe, and completely secure behind the heavy commercial deadbolts I had installed less than thirty-six hours ago.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was an incoming call from an unknown number with a Washington D.C. area code.
I picked it up and swiped to answer.
"Mrs. Vance?" a crisp, formal voice spoke through the receiver. "This is Director Hayes with the federal witness protection and asset recovery division. We’ve completed the preliminary asset freeze on Marcus Vance’s personal accounts and corporate restitution funds."
"And?" I asked calmly.
"And because your forensic risk analyses and digital backups were instrumental in breaking the syndicate wide open, the Department of Justice is releasing all frozen marital assets, free and clear of David’s debts or corporate liabilities," Director Hayes explained. "You are legally entitled to the entirety of the primary estate, unencumbered investment portfolios, and a federal informant reward of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
I leaned back against the sofa, closing my eyes as a profound, unshakeable wave of relief washed over me.

"Thank you, Director," I said quietly.
"No, Mrs. Vance," the Director replied with deep professional respect. "Thank you for changing your locks."
