Chapter 9 - The Final Protocol

The remainder of the evening proceeded with the flawless, mechanical precision of a well-oiled machine.
The keynote speeches were delivered, the multi-course dinner was served, and toast after toast was raised to the alliance between the armed forces and the civilian leadership supporting them. Throughout it all, I played my part with the exact same unshakeable composure I had maintained for twenty-two years of service.
When the formal program concluded and the string quartet transitioned into softer, ambient dinner music, guests began to mingle freely across the floor.
Several senior officers approached our table to pay their respects, addressing me with crisp professionalism and offering polite, cordial nods to Frank, who handled the social interactions with grace.
Helen did not approach our table.
In fact, roughly twenty minutes after the formal dinner ended, I saw her slip out through the side exit near the coat check, her emerald sequined wrap clutched tightly around her shoulders, her head bowed low as she practically ran from the building to escape the suffocating weight of her own public disgrace.
She didn't say goodbye. She didn't offer an apology.
She simply vanished into the cold winter night, retreating to a world where she could no longer control the narrative, rewrite the facts, or pretend she was the most important person in the room.
Frank watched her leave from the corner of his eye, letting out a long, quiet exhale.
"Do you want me to call an Uber for her?" Frank asked quietly.
"No," I answered, swirling the sparkling water in my glass. "She has her own car. Let her drive home in the quiet. It will give her time to think."
May you like
"Think?" Frank gave a dry, humorless laugh. "Mom doesn't think, Evelyn. She protects her ego. By morning, she'll probably convince herself that she discovered your talent and pushed you into the Navy herself."
I smiled faintly, looking across the glittering expanse of the ballroom. "Let her tell whatever story helps her sleep. It changes nothing."
