Chapter 6 - The Unfolding Connection

“You,” Evelyn whispered, taking a slow step toward me.

I instinctively shifted back, my arms locked around Lily. “Stay away from us.”

“You thought you were being clever, didn’t you?” Evelyn sneered, her voice rising in pitch as hysteria began to pierce through her composure. “You thought you could slip into our lives, marry my son, and bring that bloodline right back into this house under the guise of an ordinary romance?”

Daniel stepped between us again, his voice cracking with fury and disbelief. “Mom, have you completely lost your mind?! Sarah didn't even know who my father was before we met! Her parents are from Ohio! What does any of this insane conspiracy have to do with my wife and my daughter?!”

“Ask her!” Evelyn screamed, slamming her palm onto the table. “Ask your precious wife where she got her maiden name! Ask her who her biological grandfather was!”

All eyes in the dining room snapped from Evelyn to me. The heavy silence became suffocating.

I stared at Evelyn, my mind racing through the fragments of my own family history. My mother had died when I was young. My father had always been quiet, distant, rarely speaking of his own parents, claiming they had died in a fire before he was born. I had grown up knowing almost nothing about my paternal lineage.

“I... I don't know what you're talking about,” I said, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to remain strong for Lily. “My father was Robert Miller. He was a mechanic.”

“Robert Miller was an alias!” Evelyn laughed hysterically, tears finally spilling down her powdered cheeks. “His real name was Robert Sterling—the firstborn son of the man in that photograph, abandoned and disowned by his own father before he could inherit a dime!”

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Relatives began shouting over one another, some standing up to leave, others pressing forward to catch every word.

Daniel turned to me, his eyes wide with shock, searching my face for any sign of deception. “Sarah... is this true? Did you know any of this?”

“I swear to God, Daniel, I had no idea!” I cried, panic gripping my chest. “I never even met my grandfather! My father never spoke of him!”
