Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep bruises of purple and orange as we packed up our picnic basket and headed back toward the car.

Frederick was fast asleep in his stroller, his thumb tucked securely in his corner of his mouth, breathing softly with the deep, untroubled peace of a child who knew he was safe.

We drove home under a canopy of emerging stars. When we turned into our driveway, the house stood tall and welcoming against the night, bathed in the warm, soft glow of the porch lights we had chosen together.

I parked the car, killed the engine, and stepped out into the crisp evening air. I walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and lifted Frederick gently out of his car seat, taking care not to wake him.

Clara walked beside me up the stone pathway, her hand sliding smoothly into mine. Her fingers were warm, strong, and completely secure.

I unlocked the front door using the new biometric deadbolt—a quiet, frictionless click that signaled the absolute security of our domain. We stepped inside our hallway, kicking off our shoes, the scent of lavender and cedar welcoming us home.

I carried our sleeping son upstairs to his nursery, tucked him gently into his crib, and pulled his favorite cotton blanket up to his chin. I stood there for a long moment, watching his chest rise and fall in the dim light of the star projector.

"I love you," Clara whispered, stepping up behind me and wrapping her arms around my waist, resting her cheek against my back.

"I love you too," I answered, turning around to pull her into a tight, fierce embrace.

We walked out of the nursery together, closing the door softly behind us, leaving the past buried in the shadows where it belonged. Our home was ours again. Our lives were ours again. And no matter what storms might try to roll in from the outside world in the years to come, we knew that as long as we stood side by side, our fortress would never fall.
