Chapter 3 - The Broken Syndicate

By midnight, the penthouse suite of the Drake Hotel felt less like a luxury accommodation and more like a besieged fortress.

Emily had finally fallen asleep in the master bedroom, worn out by the emotional whiplash of the evening. She clutched her academic trophy against her chest like a shield, her breathing slow and rhythmic. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the rain lash against the glass, reflecting the neon veins of the city below.

A sharp knock at the door broke the silence.

I approached cautiously, checking the security peephole. Standing on the other side was Madison Parker, my divorce attorney and the closest thing I had to a sister over the last seven years.

I unlocked the door and pulled it open. Madison slipped inside, shaking the rain from her trench coat. Her sharp, intelligent face was etched with exhaustion, but her eyes were razor-sharp.

"The internet is on fire," Madison said without preamble, tossing a tablet onto the glass coffee table. "Every society blog, every local news outlet, and half the national entertainment desks are running clips of your speech. The headline on the *Chicago Sun-Times* digital edition literally reads: *'The Secret Moretti Heiress: Charity Gala Explodes into Dynastic Scandal.'*"

I rubbed my temples, sinking into an armchair. "How bad is the legal fallout?"

"Vincent’s legal team filed an emergency motion for a paternity injunction at eleven o'clock tonight," Madison said grimly, sitting opposite me. "They found a judge awake. The Morettis own half the judiciary in Cook County, Claire. He wants an expedited DNA test and a temporary restraining order preventing you from taking Emily out of Illinois."

"He can't do that!" I snapped, my heart racing. "Our custody agreement was filed and sealed in Massachusetts!"

"He's arguing jurisdiction fraud," Madison explained calmly, though her jaw was tight. "He’s claiming you intentionally obscured his biological paternity to kidnap his legitimate heir. It’s bullshit, and we can beat it in federal court, but it buys him time. If you try to board a flight at O'Hare tomorrow morning, his private security or the state police will intercept you."

I closed my eyes, fighting back the wave of nausea that threatened to overwhelm me. "He's trapping me."

"He's panicking," Madison corrected. "There's a difference. Vincent Moretti has never lost control of anything in his life. Tonight, you ripped the steering wheel out of his hands on a public stage."

Suddenly, my phone vibrated violently against the marble tabletop.

The screen displayed an unknown Chicago number.

Madison gave me a warning look. "Don't answer it."

"I have to know what he's doing," I said quietly.

I picked up the phone, swiped to answer, and brought it to my ear. I remained silent.

"Claire."

It wasn't Vincent.

It was my mother, Eleanor Bennett. Her voice was shrill, laced with the same suffocating condescension she had weaponized against me my entire childhood.

"Do you have any idea what you've done?" Eleanor shrieked into the receiver. "Sophia is beside herself! She is hyperventilating in the Moretti drawing room! The Bennetts have been completely humiliated! How dare you show your face in Chicago and pull a stunt like that?"

A cold, bitter calm settled over me. "Hello, Mother. It’s lovely to hear from you after seven years of absolute silence."

"Don't you get sarcastic with me, young lady!" Eleanor spat. "We gave you everything, and all you've ever done is bring shame to this family. Sophia gave Vincent a son. An heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire! She secured our family’s future! And you... you hide away with some bastard child and try to ruin everything?"

"That 'bastard child' is your biological granddaughter, Eleanor," I said, my voice dangerously level. "And she has more dignity, intelligence, and grace in her little finger than you and Sophia have in your entire bodies."

"She is a threat to Lucas!" Eleanor shouted. "Vincent is losing his mind! He ordered his men to take Lucas’s DNA tonight along with samples from Emily’s old school records! Do you know what kind of insult that is to Sophia? If you don't issue a public retraction immediately, your father and I will publicly disown you—"

"You already disowned me seven years ago when you stood outside my delivery room and told me to stop being selfish," I interrupted, every word dripping with ice. "Listen to me very carefully, Mother. You and Sophia gambled everything on Vincent Moretti's loyalty. But Vincent is a predator. And you just gave him a reason to start hunting."

I hung up the phone and blocked the number.

Before I could set the phone down, it chimed with an incoming notification. An encrypted message from a secure server.

I opened it. Attached was a laboratory document stamped with the seal of Northwestern Memorial Hospital's private forensics unit.

The test had compared hair samples recovered from Emily's stage lanyard with Vincent Moretti's direct genetic profile.

*Probability of Paternity: 99.998%.*

Beneath the document was a single line of text from Vincent’s private number:

May you like

*I am outside your hotel. We talk tonight, or I swear to God I will buy this entire building just to knock on your door.*
