Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Home

It was nearly four in the morning by the time Bethany’s arm was casted in bright pink fiberglass and we were escorted out of the hospital by a security officer.

I didn't take her to my apartment.

My parents had a spare key to my rental unit, and my father knew the building landlord personally. Instead, I drove thirty miles out of the city to a quiet, extended-stay suite near the interstate—a place booked under my middle name with cash I had withdrawn from an ATM.

Bethany slept soundly in the king-sized bed, exhausted by the trauma and the mild pain medication prescribed by Dr. Chen. I sat in a chair near the window, watching the dawn creep over the gray skyline, unable to close my eyes for even a second.

At 8:15 AM, my phone buzzed again.

It was an unknown local number. Thinking it might be Detective Ramirez—the investigator Officer Henderson had assigned to the case—I answered.

“Clara?”

It wasn't the detective. It was my mother.

Her voice wasn't booming with anger anymore. It had shifted into a sickly-sweet, trembling vibrato—her weapon of choice when intimidation failed.

“Clara, thank God you answered,” Evelyn wept softly. “I haven't slept a wink. Your father and I are sick with worry. Why haven't you been at your apartment? We drove by at seven to drop off some breakfast and check on our sweet girl, but your car wasn't in the lot.”

A cold dread coiled in my stomach. They had already gone to my home.

“Why were you at my apartment, Evelyn?” I asked, stripping every trace of filial affection from my voice.

A brief pause on the line. She bristled at being called by her first name, but she swallowed it down. “We are your family, Clara! We were worried sick! Look… I know things got out of hand last night. Vanessa is devastated. She’s sitting right here next to me, crying her eyes out. She feels horrible about how she handled Bethany’s little tantrum.”

“Tantrum?” I repeated, my knuckles whitening around the phone. “Is that what you’re calling it?”

“You know how high-strung Vanessa gets,” Evelyn continued smoothly, as if glossing over an accidental spill of red wine on a white tablecloth. “She overreacted. She shouldn't have grabbed her so roughly. But Bethany was out of control, Clara. You’ve spoiled that child, and she doesn't know how to respect adults. Still, Vanessa wants to make it right. We want to pay for whatever doctor bills you have. We can hire a private therapist for Bethany. Your father is even willing to set up a college trust fund for her—fifty thousand dollars, Clara. Right now.”

The sheer audacity took my breath away.

A payoff.

They were offering fifty thousand dollars to buy my daughter’s silence and sweep a fractured bone under the rug.

“Put Vanessa on the phone,” I commanded.

“Clara, be gentle with her, she’s fragile—”

“Put her on the phone, or I hang up right now.”

A rustle of fabric, a muffled whisper, and then Vanessa’s voice came through the receiver. But the tears my mother had promised were nowhere to be heard. Vanessa’s voice was hard, venomous, and dripping with smug defiance.

“Look, Clara,” Vanessa spat. “I don't know what kind of game you’re playing, hiding out like a coward, but Dad has already spoken to his attorney. He knows the chief of police in this county. If you think you can walk into a police station with some fabricated story about me abusing Bethany, you’re out of your mind. It’s your word against three respectable adults. Who do you think CPS is going to believe? An unhinged single mother with a history of anxiety, or a family that donates six figures to the children’s hospital?”

A bitter, humorless laugh escaped my lips.

“You really don't know, do you?” I asked quietly.

“Know what?” Vanessa snapped.

“My mother told you she wiped the security system in the playroom,” I said, listening to the sudden dead silence on the other end of the line. “She told you the hard drive was blank. But Maya had cloud access on her monitoring tablet, Vanessa. I watched the video. The pediatric ER staff watched the video. The Child Protective Services caseworker watched the video.”

The silence stretched for three agonizing seconds.

“You’re lying,” Vanessa’s voice cracked, the first genuine note of terror bleeding through her arrogance.

“I watched you yank her off her feet,” I continued, my voice sinking into a low, deadly whisper. “I watched you twist her wrist until the bone cracked. I watched you slap my four-year-old baby across the face. And then I watched our mother walk in, pull out wet wipes, and tell her she wouldn't see the puppies if she told me.”

In the background, I heard Evelyn shriek, “What did she say?! Arthur, what did she say?!”

“The magistrate signed the felony arrest warrants forty minutes ago, Vanessa,” I said calmly. “I suggest you stay right where you are. It’ll make it much easier for the squad cars to find you.”

I terminated the call.

Before I could set the phone down, the screen lit up with an incoming call from an official line.
