Chapter 3 - The Ghost on the Reel

The display screen on Rachel’s terminal flickered to life, illuminating the dim study with the grainy, high-contrast monochrome feed of an analog optical camera hidden inside the carved crown molding above the bookshelf.

The timestamp in the lower-right corner read: SUNDAY // 11:14:02 AM.

On the screen, the study was quiet, sunlight slanting across the empty mahogany desk.

Then the double doors clicked open.

Vanessa Grayson slipped into the room.

She was wearing her cream silk dress and gold belt, her blonde hair pinned neatly. But her posture was completely transformed: gone was the gentle, socialite grace she displayed in front of the family; she moved with the cold, practiced, athletic efficiency of a trained operative.

She carried an unzipped designer handbag.

From the bag, she pulled a small red aluminum cylinder—the exact hardware dongle Zoey had described. She inserted it into the diagnostic port beneath the safe keypad.

The screen captured the flash of green light.

The safe swung open.

Vanessa reached inside, pulled out the heavy blue leather binder, and laid it flat on Daniel’s desk.

She did not flip through the pages casually.

She pulled an encrypted satellite smartphone from her bag, mounted it on a miniature carbon-fiber tripod, and rapidly scanned thirty-six pages of classified military logistics schematics in less than three minutes.

Then she pulled an earpiece from her pocket, pressing it into her right ear as the call connected.

The analog microphone hidden in the chandelier had captured every word:

"The Leviathan protocols are completely digitized, Julian. Forty-two pages of autonomous defense routing. I'm wiping the local terminal logs now. Once Daniel signs the marital asset consolidation trust during the anniversary gala on the twelfth, full voting control of Grayson Shipping transfers to my equity pool. You can wire the thirty million to the Zurich escrow before sunrise."

A pause. Then Vanessa laughed—a cold, venomous sound that made the hair stand up on my arms.

"No, he doesn't suspect a thing. He's an arrogant, sentimental fool who thinks giving money to orphanages makes him untouchable. And the maid? I planted the Cartier bracelet inside her daughter's winter boots in the cottage locker an hour ago. When the county detectives search the staff quarters tomorrow, Angela will be arrested for grand larceny, and Daniel won't have a single witness left in this house."

The audio died with the sharp click of the phone disconnecting.

On the screen, Vanessa replaced the blue binder, locked the safe, smoothed her skirt, and glided out of the study with a pleasant, rehearsed smile on her face.

Inside the room, the silence was absolute.

Vanessa was backed entirely against the glass wall, her hands clawing at the curtains, her breath coming in ragged, terrified wheezes as the color completely drained from her face.

"Daniel... please," Vanessa choked out, falling to her knees on the Persian rug. "It... it wasn't my idea! Julian Sterling threatened my family! He held my brother's debts in Grand Cayman! He told me he would destroy us if I didn't get the defense protocols!"

Daniel didn't move.

He stood looking down at the woman he had married eleven months ago, his slate-gray eyes colder than the winter Atlantic.

"You didn't just steal my company's secrets, Vanessa," Daniel whispered softly.

Each word fell with the weight of an iron hammer.

"You brought industrial espionage into my home. You attempted to frame an honest mother who works twelve hours a day to feed her child. And you planned to send a three-year-old girl to a state foster dormitory so you could pocket thirty pieces of silver in Zurich."

Daniel looked toward the open doorway.

"Rachel."

"Sir?"

"Take her down to the holding suite beneath the security post. Confiscate her phone, her passport, and her rings. Call Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Chief Investigator Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division."

Daniel’s gaze flicked to the terrified woman sobbing on the floor.

"And tell them," Daniel added, "that the Grayson family is ready to unseal the indictment."
