Chapter 8 - Healing the House

By evening, the federal agents had cleared out, the forensic teams had finished collecting evidence from the basement, and paramedics had thoroughly checked Lucy over, confirming that despite severe dehydration, frost-nip, and malnutrition, she was going to make a full physical recovery.

We sat together in the living room. The house was quiet again—not the suffocating, terrifying quiet of hidden secrets, but the warm, restorative silence of a family finally put back together.

Jack sat curled up on the sofa with his head resting securely in his mother’s lap, fast asleep, clutching her hand as if afraid she would vanish into thin air if he let go.

I sat in the armchair opposite them, holding a cup of coffee, looking at the woman I had loved, lost, and miraculously found again.

“How did you know to call the FBI, Lucy?” I asked softly, breaking the quiet. “How did you reach them?”

Lucy looked down at Jack, running her fingers gently through his dark hair, a faint, weary smile touching her lips.

“About a month ago, Diane got sloppy,” Lucy explained, her voice still raspy but gaining strength. “She forgot to lock the inner deadbolt on the freezer storage shelf while bringing down extra catering supplies. I managed to pry open a service vent pipe that led up into the kitchen floorboards near the baseboard.”

She pointed toward the kitchen archway.

“I couldn't scream loud enough for you to hear over the television or the kitchen mixer upstairs,” she continued. “So, using a piece of wire I found in the toolbox, I managed to fish a discarded, old emergency burner phone Diane had hidden in a supply bin—the one she used to talk to Julian about the trust funds. I memorized your cell number, Mark, but I knew if I called you directly while Diane or Julian were in the house, they’d intercept it or cut the line.”

“So you called the federal tip line?” I asked, amazed.

“I called the federal fraud division,” Lucy nodded. “I gave them my father’s trust account numbers, the corporate routing codes, and the address of the commercial freezer. I told them if they arrived with a federal warrant, they’d catch my brother red-handed in the middle of an interstate financial felony. The agents set up the surveillance operation three days ago. They were waiting for Julian to make his final move.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath, shaking my head in disbelief. “You outsmarted both of them from inside a block of ice.”

“Never underestimate a mother who wants to get back to her son,” Lucy whispered, leaning down to kiss Jack’s forehead.
