Chapter 9 - The Fallout

The downfall of the Vance family made front-page news across New England within twelve hours.
“BILLIONAIRE HEIR AND SOCIALITE MOTHER ARRESTED IN DISTURBING BABY POISONING PLOT,” screamed the digital banner across the Boston Globe. Financial networks reported that Sterling-Vance Enterprises was facing immediate federal liquidation as the government seized all corporate assets connected to the illegal import of hazardous industrial chemicals.
Neil Vance and his mother were denied bail during their arraignment on Tuesday morning, classified as extreme flight risks and severe threats to public safety. The digital audit of Neil’s office computer revealed dozens of encrypted messages between him and his mother detailing their plan to institutionalize me and quietly replace Toby with a compliant surrogate heir from a family of their choosing.
The family court emergency petition Neil had filed was thrown out with prejudice by a furious family court judge, who granted me full, unhindered legal and physical custody of Toby, along with an immediate freeze on all joint marital assets to ensure our lifelong financial security.
I didn't stay in the marital home. With Mark’s help, I packed up our belongings, sold the suburban house, and purchased a gorgeous, sunlit modern home nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street in a coastal town three hours north—far away from the ghosts of the Vance estate, far away from grasping matriarchs, and far away from toxic marriages.

The first night in our new home, as I sat on the wide wrap-around porch watching the sun dip below the ocean horizon, Toby fell fast asleep in my arms, breathing peacefully, his little chest rising and falling in perfect rhythm.
I looked down at him, kissing his soft forehead, knowing that no matter what storms lay ahead in the world, my baby was safe, he was loved, and he was entirely mine.
