Chapter 2 - The Face in the Shadows

The man standing in the doorway of the study on the security monitor wasn't a stranger. He wasn't a hired criminal or an anonymous corporate shark.

It was David Mercer—my younger brother.

On the screen, David walked casually into the room, unbuttoning his winter coat and tossing it over the back of the sofa with the practiced ease of someone who treated my house like his personal staging ground. He reached down, plucked a pen from the mahogany desk, and spun it between his fingers.

"Traffic on the bridge was backed up," David’s voice echoed through the kitchen speaker, smooth and devoid of any remorse. "Besides, it’s not like the boy is going anywhere. He sleeps like a rock once Sarah gives him that herbal syrup."

Beside me in the real kitchen, Sarah let out a sharp, choked gasp and covered her mouth with both hands. She knew the game was entirely over. The web of deceit she had woven with my own blood had just been shredded down to the bare wires.

I stood paralyzed, staring at the screen. David. My own brother. The man I had bailed out of debt three times, the uncle I had welcomed into our home for Sunday dinners, the person I trusted second only to Clara.

"Did you bring the amended signature pages?" Julian Vance asked on the screen, tapping the leather folder.

"Right here," David said, pulling a stack of crisp white papers from his inner jacket pocket and dropping them onto the desk. "Every single clause re-routed through the shell corporation in the Caymans. Once Ethan signs the medical proxy authorization form—which Sarah is working on getting past him—we lock down his medical decisions, declare him mentally unfit due to his 'grief-induced stress,' and push the trust transfer through probate court uncontested."

"And the boy?" Julian asked, his voice chillingly professional as he flipped through the forged pages.

"Keep him out of the way," David muttered, leaning against the edge of the desk. "He’s too observant. He keeps asking about his mother’s old things. Sarah can deal with him however she sees fit, as long as the accounts clear before the end of the quarter."

The video feed cut to black as the automated motion sensor reset, leaving the kitchen in an eerie, ringing silence.

I slowly turned my head away from the tablet and looked down at Sarah. She was shaking violently now, her back pressed hard against the kitchen island, her eyes wide with a terror that finally matched the fear she had inflicted upon my son.

"You and David," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried a lethal, chilling gravity that made her shrink into herself. "How long?"

"Ethan, please..." she sobbed, sliding down the quartz counter until she sat in a heap on the tile floor. "It started six months ago. David said... he said you were blind to how much money Clara left behind. He said you were living like a common worker while sitting on a goldmine, and that you deserved to be free of her ghost. He promised we could start over, just the three of us—"

"Us?" I interrupted, a dark, humorless laugh escaping my throat. "You and my brother? You thought you could conspire to steal my late wife’s legacy, gaslight my son, lock him in a doghouse like an animal, and walk away scot-free?"

I didn't wait for her to answer. I pulled my phone from the counter, brought up my contacts list, and dialed a number I had never wanted to use.

"Who are you calling?" Sarah cried out, scrambling forward to grab my ankle. "Ethan, don't call the police! Think of the family! Think of what this will do to David—"

"David is dead to me," I snapped, stepping away from her touch as if she carried a plague. "And you are looking at a very long prison sentence for extortion, conspiracy, and child endangerment."

I put the phone to my ear as the call connected.

"State Police Dispatch, what is your emergency?" a calm voice answered.

"My name is Ethan Hayes," I said, locking my eyes onto the trembling woman on my kitchen floor. "I need to report an active, multi-party white-collar conspiracy, corporate fraud, and the unlawful abuse of a minor. I have forty-eight hours of high-definition security footage and encrypted financial trails ready to upload to your cybercrimes division. Send units to my address immediately."
