Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Empire

Grant stood frozen on the altar platform, his chest heaving, sweat beading across his forehead and ruining his perfectly styled hair. He looked around the room, expecting someone—anyone—from his inner circle to meet his eye, to offer a word of support, to rush to his defense.
Every single person looked away.
His business partners were already checking their phones, frantically texting their corporate lawyers to sever all financial ties before the federal investigations inevitably hit the press. The fraternity brothers sat with their arms crossed, staring down at their polished shoes, distancing themselves from a sinking ship.
“Evelyn...” Grant whispered, his voice cracking, the arrogant alpha facade completely replaced by the pathetic whine of a trapped animal. He took a stumbling step toward me, holding out his hands. “Evelyn, please. We can talk about this. We can fix this. Don’t do this to us—we have a future, we’ve built so much together—”
“We haven't built anything together, Grant,” I said, my voice cutting through his pleading like a blade of ice. “You lived in my shadow while trying to steal my foundation. You thought my quietness was weakness. You thought my restraint was fear.”
I turned toward the back row.
Rachel stood up smoothly, snapping her leather briefcase shut. She gave me a crisp, professional nod and walked briskly down the central aisle, stopping right at the base of the altar steps.
She reached into her briefcase and pulled out two sets of documents.
“Grant Holloway,” Rachel announced, her voice ringing with formal legal authority. “As of twelve minutes ago, federal marshals have executed a search and seizure warrant at your corporate headquarters, seizing all assets linked to insider trading and corporate extortion connected to your municipal contracts.”
Rachel held up the second set of papers.
“Furthermore, this is a formal restraining order prohibiting you from coming within five hundred feet of Evelyn Hart, her residence, or her corporate entities, effective immediately.”
Grant stared at the papers in Rachel’s hand as if they were venomous snakes.

“You can’t do this,” Grant whispered, shaking his head in denial. “I’m a partner. I’m a founder—I’m—'”
“You’re unemployed,” Rachel corrected flatly.
