Chapter 6 - The Affidavit

The reporters exploded into a frenzy of shouting and flashbulbs.

"Claire! Claire, were you kidnapped?!"

"Ms. Whitmore, what happened at the hotel?!"

"Is Matteo Vane holding you hostage?!"

Claire ignored the shouting microphones, her leather heels clicking with sharp, rhythmic precision against the granite steps. Matteo walked beside her, his tall frame cutting a path through the surging crowd, his hand resting lightly at the small of her back—not forcing her forward, but standing as an immovable barrier between her and the press.

As they reached the top landing, Nathan took a frantic step backward, his hands trembling.

"Claire..." Nathan gasped, his voice cracking. "Claire, thank God! What... what are you doing with him? He's... he's dangerous! Get away from him!"

Judge Grant Whitmore stepped forward, trying to maintain his judicial composure, though a bead of cold sweat rolled down his temple. "Claire, step behind me right now. Officers! Arrest that man! He's holding my daughter!"

Four state troopers moved forward, their hands resting on their sidearms.

"Touch him," Claire said, her voice ringing out across the quieted landing with a authority that shocked her father to his core, "and I'll have the Federal Marshal's office issue an immediate warrant for your arrest for obstruction of justice."

The troopers stopped dead.

Grant stared at his daughter as if she had suddenly transformed into a stranger. "Claire... what are you talking about? Have you lost your mind?"

Claire pulled a thick white envelope from the inside pocket of her navy coat. She didn't hand it to her father. She handed it directly to a senior federal prosecutor who was standing near the courtroom doors, having just stepped outside to investigate the commotion.

"This is an emergency affidavit, Assistant U.S. Attorney Miller," Claire said, her tone clear, cold, and echoing off the marble walls. "It details eleven million dollars of fraudulent transfers from my personal trust account, executed by Nathan Caldwell with the explicit authorization of Judge Grant Whitmore."

A collective gasp swept through the reporters behind them. Lenses zoomed in on the white envelope.

"That's a lie!" Nathan shouted, his face turning an ugly, mottled red. "She's unstable! She ran away from our wedding because she had a mental breakdown!"

"I ran away from our wedding," Claire corrected, turning her head to look Nathan dead in the eye, "because at four-thirty yesterday afternoon, you told me on the dance floor that I wouldn't survive our honeymoon in Bar Harbor."

The reporters went wild. Shouts broke out from the crowd.

"Did he threaten you, Claire?!"

"What about the Maine house?!"

Nathan looked at the cameras, then at the federal prosecutor who was already opening the envelope, his eyes scanning the certified Cayman bank records attached inside.

"She has no proof!" Nathan yelled desperately. "It's her word against mine!"

Matteo stepped forward then. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. The simple movement of his massive frame stepping into the center of the terrace made every man in the area go silent.

Matteo reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, high-definition digital audio recorder.

He pressed play.

Nathan's smooth, recorded voice cut through the cold morning air, amplified by the courthouse's marble courtyard:

“Your trust becomes fully accessible once the marriage paperwork is processed. Your life insurance beneficiary was changed last week... A grieving husband inherits everything... You won’t make it home from the honeymoon.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Nathan staggered back until his spine hit the marble pillar of the courthouse.

"Where..." Nathan whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "Where did you get that?"

"You forgot that high-end bridal suites have security systems with audio recording for high-value jewelry," Matteo said smoothly, his pale eyes burning with quiet triumph. "The Halcyon Hotel was happy to share their files with my legal team two hours ago."

Matteo leaned in closer to Nathan, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that only Nathan and Grant could hear.

"And by the way, Nathan... my uncle's ring fits her thumb quite nicely. We found the security codes. The federal grand jury convenes at noon."
