Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

The revelation hit Valerie like a physical blow. The world she had curated—the brilliant career, the Michelin stars, the devoted husband, the safe, beautiful home—shattered into a million jagged pieces around her feet.
All those late nights she had stayed at Le Miroir, patting herself on the back for being a hardworking modern mother providing a lavish lifestyle for her family...
All those times Daniel had kissed her cheek at the door, whispering, “Go run your empire, darling, I’ve got Thomas covered”...
All those "clumsy falls," the "accidental bicycle crashes," the "playground scuffles" that Daniel had explained away with such smooth, loving concern...
They weren't accidents. They were torture sessions. And while she was busy polishing silverware and impressing food critics, a homeless twelve-year-old boy living in a freezing alleyway had been acting as her son’s human shield.
Valerie let out a sound that was half-choke, half-sob. She rushed forward, dropping to her knees on the cold floor, ignoring the dirt and the dampness, and wrapped her arms around Thomas, pulling him violently against her chest.
"My baby... my sweet baby," Valerie wept, pressing frantic kisses into his hair. "I didn't know. Oh God, Thomas, I swear to you, I didn't know."
Thomas didn't pull away, but his body remained rigid in her embrace, the emotional wall he had built over years of abuse too thick to melt away in a single second.
Daniel stepped back, realizing the game was entirely up. His charm evaporated, leaving behind a cold, calculating coward. He forced a tight, defensive laugh, looking around at the stunned restaurant patrons. "Don't listen to them," Daniel said, his voice rising in panic. "The boy is delusional! He’s a street rat, probably put up to this by some bitter competitor trying to ruin my reputation! And Thomas... Thomas has an overactive imagination, he falls down all the time—"
"Shut up, Daniel," Valerie said.
Her voice wasn't loud. It wasn't hysterical. It was cold, flat, and dead.
She slowly stood up from the floor, releasing Thomas into Leo’s gentle, protective care. She turned around to face her husband of twelve years—the man she had loved, trusted, and built an empire beside.
Daniel swallowed hard, taking a nervous step back. "Valerie, darling... let's talk about this at home. We can get family counseling—"
Smack.
The sound of Valerie’s open palm connecting across Daniel’s cheek echoed off the vaulted ceilings louder than any glass breaking.
Daniel stumbled sideways, clutching his face, his eyes flashing with sudden, violent rage. "You bitch—"
May you like
Before Daniel could lunge, three massive security guards, having finally recovered from their shock, swarmed him. They pinned his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency, shoving him hard against the mahogany wall.
"Julian," Valerie commanded, her voice like steel. "Call the police. Report a case of severe child abuse and domestic battery. And call our corporate legal counsel. I want my husband locked up before he can draw another breath."
