Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Syndicate

At 2:00 p.m. on Friday, the grand executive boardroom of the Caruso Tower was convened for the formal restructuring of the family empire.
The thirty-two loyal division directors, terminal operators, and labor union representatives sat in rapt, respectful attention as Arthur Ross presented the unsealed testamentary charters.
Hannah sat at the head of the table, holding Grace on her lap. The little girl was happily chewing on a soft silicone teething ring, her bright gray eyes watching the sunlight dance across the mahogany wood.
"Item one on today's agenda," Arthur Ross announced, "is the formal, permanent registration of the Grace Julian Caruso Generational Trust, endowed with one hundred and fifty million dollars in liquid maritime assets and thirty-five percent of the permanent voting equity in Caruso International."
I took the master gold-nibbed fountain pen—the pen Julian and I had inherited from our father—and signed the master charter:
CHIEF FIDUCIARY TRUSTEE: HANNAH REED-CARUSO
SOVEREIGN GUARDIAN & PROTECTOR: DANTE CARUSO
PRIMARY HEIR: GRACE CARUSO
Hannah took the pen, her hand steady and graceful as she signed her name beneath mine, sealing the union of our family under the law.
The entire boardroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
The longshoremen union delegates and fleet captains rose to their feet, raising their glasses in a joyful, roaring tribute that echoed through the high-vaulted glass atrium.
I turned to Hannah, taking her hand into my strong, warm palm, looking into her hazel eyes with an expression of profound, unbridled devotion.

"Your days of cleaning floors are over, Hannah," I said softly, my voice rich with peace. "From this day forward, you are the Matriarch of this house."
Hannah smiled through tears of boundless joy, leaning her head against my shoulder as Grace giggled, reaching up to touch both of our faces with her tiny, warm hands.
