Chapter 5 - The Crack in the Wall

By Wednesday, the legal machinery had begun grinding my family’s pristine facade into dust.
The sheriff’s department served the Temporary Restraining Orders at Seth’s workplace. Evelyn had strategically coordinated the service to take place at 10:30 AM at the regional corporate office of Miller, Vance & Sterling, the prestigious accounting firm where Seth had spent five years clawing his way toward partnership.
Two uniformed deputies entered the glass-fronted lobby, requested Seth Miller by name, and handed him the brightly colored court documents in full view of his managing partners, associates, and administrative staff.
The effect was instantaneous.
At 1:15 PM, my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar local number.
"Kallie?" The voice on the other end was trembling, breathless, and whispered.
"Who is this?"
"It’s Maya. Please don't hang up. Please."
Maya was my twenty-four-year-old cousin, the daughter of my mother’s younger sister, Linda. She had always been quiet, the timid girl who hid behind her sketchbook at family reunions, terrified of my father’s booming voice and my mother’s razor tongue.
"Why are you calling me, Maya?" I asked guardedly. "Did my mother send you?"
"No! God, no! Aunt Bethany has been screaming all morning. Seth got suspended from his job pending an internal investigation. His boss saw the restraining order and the police report reference." Maya stopped, choking back a sob. "Kallie... I can't sleep. Every time I close my eyes, I hear the sound of him hitting Paisley. I hear her crying."
I remained silent, letting the guilt hang in the air between us.
"I was sitting on the loveseat right across from the cake table," Maya continued, her words tumbling out rapidly. "I had my phone out because I was recording a video for my Instagram story. I was filming Clara blowing out the candles on the cupcakes... and then Paisley walked over to the centerpiece."
My grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles turned white. "Maya... what are you saying?"
"I caught it. On video."
My heart stopped. "You have the slap on video?"
"The whole thing," she sobbed. "I have Seth winding his arm back. I have him looking right at her, snarling, and hitting her so hard she flew back into the rug. I have Aunt Bethany walking over, laughing, and telling him 'good job.' And then I have you running in."
A wave of cold adrenaline surged through my veins. The audio was damning, but in the modern world of legal battles and public opinion, high-definition video footage was absolute annihilation.
"Why didn't you say something that day, Maya?" I asked, my voice thick with emotion. "You watched my baby get hit and you sat there while they lied to my face."
"Because I was terrified!" she cried. "Uncle Arthur pays my college tuition! He co-signed my student loans! Aunt Bethany told me on Sunday night that if I ever spoke of that video, they would cut off my tuition and kick me out of the family condo! But Kallie... this morning, Seth was at the house, screaming that he was going to come find you, that he was going to make you pay for ruining his career... and Aunt Bethany was agreeing with him! They are sick, Kallie. They're actually sick. I can't be part of this anymore."
"Where is the video now, Maya?"
"I saved it to an unlisted Dropbox folder. I just sent the link to your personal email." Maya took a shaky breath. "Use it. Do whatever you have to do to protect Paisley. Even if Uncle Arthur cuts me off... I don't care anymore. Paisley didn't deserve that."
"Thank you, Maya," I whispered. "You have no idea what you just did."
I hung up, opened my inbox, and clicked the link.
When the video loaded, I forced myself to watch. It was worse than I had remembered.
Paisley was simply smiling, pointing at a shiny gold ribbon. Seth wasn't casually swatting her hand; his face was contorted in genuine, sadistic rage. He had struck a defenseless two-year-old with the force an adult would use in a street fight.
I forwarded the file directly to Detective Miller and Evelyn Vance.
Five minutes later, Evelyn called my cell.

"Kallie," Evelyn said, her voice crackling with fierce professional triumph. "Cancel your afternoon plans. The District Attorney’s office just upgraded Seth’s charges to felony child abuse with intentional infliction of great bodily injury. A warrant for his arrest has just been signed by a judge."
