The sun was beginning to drop behind the pine ridges of southern Maine when the front door of the cottage clicked open.
Stepping into the great room, wearing a wet charcoal wool overcoat and carrying a heavy aluminum camera tripod under his arm, was a man in his late forties with sharp, intelligent features, a silver-threaded beard, and the watchful, calculating eyes of an investigative journalist.
