Chapter 3 - The Dawn Execution

At 6:30 a.m. on Friday, the morning sun rose over downtown Chicago in a cold, brilliant blaze of orange and slate-gray.

The headquarters of Vance & Sterling Financial Services—a forty-story glass-and-steel tower on LaSalle Street—was quiet as the early janitorial shifts completed their rounds.

Inside the thirty-eighth-floor executive suite, Arthur Vance sat behind his ten-foot Brazilian rosewood desk, sipping black coffee, reviewing an emergency wire transfer authorization on his laptop.

Beside him stood Harrison Cole—Samantha’s father—wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat, his face pale and haggard after a sleepless night.

"Did Samantha confirm the arrest?" Harrison demanded, slamming his palm against the desk. "The twenty-sixth birthday deadline passed at midnight! If Clarissa filed a probate appearance before the court opens, our seventy-million-dollar credit facility collapses!"

"Calm down, Harrison," Arthur Vance replied smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "The narcotics officers had the warrants ready. Samantha said she lured Clarissa into Luca DeLuca's private booth. If DeLuca didn't shoot her on sight, the police took her in the alley. The girl is an orphan with zero legal counsel; she will sign whatever conservatorship waiver we place before her by noon."

The heavy double mahogany doors of the executive suite were suddenly blown off their hinges with a concussive hydraulic roar.

BANG.

The clatter of heavy tactical combat boots against the marble floorboards echoed through the vaulted room, followed instantly by the authoritative commands of federal law enforcement.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"

Arthur Vance sprang from his leather chair, spilling his hot coffee across the white linen blotter. "What is the meaning of this? Who authorized this breach?"

Stepping through the shattered entrance was Clarissa Robinson.

I was no longer wearing the secondhand sapphire dress. I wore an immaculate, custom-tailored dark charcoal three-piece wool suit with razor-sharp lapels, my dark hair swept back into a severe, regal chignon, wearing my mother’s restored gold-and-sapphire signet watch on my left wrist.

Walking beside me, his commanding presence radiating total, uncontested dominance, was Luca DeLuca.

Following behind us were Arthur Ross, Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force, and four armed federal marshals in dark tactical windbreakers.

Arthur Vance’s jaw dropped. The color drained from his face in a single, catastrophic wave, leaving his skin the sallow shade of wet plaster.

"Clarissa...?" Vance stammered, his eyes darting frantically between my tailored suit, the gold watch, and the lethal mob boss standing at my side. "What... what are you doing in my private office?"

"This hasn't been your office since midnight, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting through the room with the clinical clarity of a drawn scalpel.

I stepped to the rosewood desk, looking down at the man who had forced me to clean his floors while stealing my mother’s legacy.

"I’m here to collect the keys," I whispered. "And to terminate your employment."
