Chapter 3 - The Eviction at the Penthouse

At 2:45 p.m., the private elevator of the Astor Crown Residences on Lake Shore Drive opened directly into the marble foyer of the twelve-million-dollar duplex penthouse Damian Vance had claimed as his personal kingdom.

Inside the sprawling four-bedroom residence, chaos had broken out.

Veronica Sterling was frantically shoving velvet jewelry cases, designer handbags, and stacks of cash into three large Louis Vuitton trunks laid open on the living room floor.

Her expensive silk dress was rumpled, her makeup smeared with sweat and panic as she screamed into her mobile phone:

"Daddy! Answer the phone! The bank declined my black card at the private terminal! The security guards at the lobby won't let the car service pull into the underground garage!"

In the master dressing room, Damian was tearing through the walk-in closets, throwing bespoke suits off their cedar hangers, searching for the leather briefcase containing his offshore banking tokens and his diplomatic passport.

"Where is the secondary safe key, Veronica?" Damian roared, his voice cracking with hysterical rage. "The lockbox in the floorboards! Did you move the Cayman certificates?"

"I didn't touch your lockbox!" Veronica shrieked back. "You told me the trust accounts were completely insulated! You swore to me that Elena was just a figurehead who signed whatever you put in front of her!"

The heavy mahogany double doors of the private elevator lobby clicked open with a sharp, mechanical chime.

Stepping across the threshold into the penthouse was Sheriff David Jackson, accompanied by Detective Robert Miller and four armed deputies in dark tactical windbreakers.

Behind them walked Arthur Ross, carrying an expandable leather litigation case stamped with the crimson seal of the Cook County Circuit Court.

Veronica dropped an antique diamond necklace onto the marble floor with a sharp, metallic clatter. "What are you doing here? This is a private residence! You have no legal authority to enter my home!"

"This is not your home, Miss Sterling," Sheriff Jackson announced, unrolling a certified judicial writ of immediate ejectment. "This property is titled under the Voss Ancestral Real Estate Trust. The lease agreement between the trust and Damian Vance was formally terminated for cause at twelve noon today under Cause Number 26-CH-9014."

Damian ran out of the dressing room, his shirt unbuttoned, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Jackson! Listen to me! I paid three million dollars in renovations on this penthouse! I have an equitable tenancy interest!"

"You paid for those renovations using funds embezzled directly from the Voss Employee Pension Stabilization Reserve, Mr. Vance," Arthur Ross stated, stepping forward into the living room, his polished shoes clicking sharply on the stone. "Every piece of furniture, every piece of artwork on these walls, and every fixture in this apartment was purchased with stolen capital and is currently under federal judicial sequestration."

Two commercial locksmiths stepped out of the service elevator, carrying heavy power drills and digital biometric access plates.

"You have fifteen minutes to collect your driver's licenses, personal hygiene items, and one change of civilian clothing under deputy supervision," Detective Miller commanded. "All vehicles parked in the underground structure—including the Aston Martin and the Range Rover—have had their remote ignitions disabled and are being loaded onto commercial flatbeds."

Damian collapsed onto the arm of the Italian leather sofa, clutching his head in both hands as the reality of his total, catastrophic displacement crushed what remained of his arrogance.

"Where am I supposed to go?" Damian whispered, his voice trembling with pure, unadulterated humiliation.

"That is a matter for you to resolve with the public transit system, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller replied coldly. "Your time starts now."
