Chapter 3 - The Archives of Archer Meridian

By midnight, the glittering illusion of the engagement gala had been surgically dismantled. The guests had trickled out into the night, whispering scandalous rumors into their phones; Vivienne had packed her designer bags in a screaming fit and driven off into the dark; and the great ballroom was quiet once more, save for the hum of the cleaning staff packing away the crystal.
In the private, mahogany-paneled subterranean library of the Archer estate, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of old leather and burning fireplace logs.
Elias Archer sat in a wingback leather chair, holding a glass of aged bourbon that he barely touched. Nathan sat across from him at the heavy oak desk, while Claire stood near the corner, still wearing her gray uniform, her hands resting quietly in front of her.
“Explain it to me,” Elias said, looking up at Claire. “Why were you working here as a maid, Ms. Bennett? A practitioner of the Stillwater Form doesn't just end up scrubbing floors in a billionaire’s mansion by accident.”
Claire looked down at her hands, debating how much of her life she owed these men. But looking into Elias’s weathered eyes—eyes that held a genuine, historical respect for her grandfather—she decided the truth was the only currency that mattered.
“Three years ago, my grandfather passed away in our home in Crested Butte,” Claire began, her voice steady and clear. “Before he died, the local mining conglomerate—backed by Archer Meridian subsidiaries—bought up our valley’s water rights through a series of shell companies. They rezoned our land, forced out the local families with predatory eminent domain lawsuits, and stripped the mountainside. My family lost everything trying to fight the legal battles in Denver.”
Nathan flinched as if he had been physically struck. He sat up straight, his executive instincts kicking in instantly. “What? Which subsidiary?”
“Horizon Resource Group,” Claire answered, meeting his gaze directly. “Purchased by Archer Meridian in late 2018.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened. He pulled his corporate tablet from his blazer pocket, his thumbs flying across the screen with furious speed. He accessed the encrypted legacy acquisition logs, scrolling through pages of deeply buried corporate restructuring documents from five years ago—before he had personally consolidated total executive control of the company from the old board of directors.
A heavy, sickening realization washed over his face.
“Horizon,” Nathan whispered, staring at the screen. “My former chief operating officer, Marcus Vance, ran that division before I ousted him for financial irregularities. He used front companies to acquire rural land parcels below market value, pushing out local residents before I ever knew what was happening.”
He looked up at Claire, his dark eyes filled with a raw, unexpected wave of guilt. “You came here looking for answers. Maybe even revenge.”
“I came here looking for work because I had rent to pay and an aging aunt to support in Colorado,” Claire corrected calmly. “I didn't know who owned the estate until my first week here when I saw your portrait in the east wing. But I stayed because my grandfather taught me patience. He told me that anger clouds the mind, but truth cuts through stone.”
Elias let out a low, appreciative whistle, tapping his cane against the rug. “She has Silas’s spirit, grandson. Sharp as a mountain breeze and twice as cold.”
Nathan stood up from the desk, walking slowly toward Claire. Without the protective armor of his billionaire persona, he looked human, vulnerable, and deeply troubled.
“Your family was robbed under the banner of my company,” Nathan said quietly, his voice devoid of any corporate arrogance. “And my former fiancée treated you like dirt under her shoe in your own home. I can’t undo the last five years tonight, Claire. But I can fix the foundation.”
“You don't owe me charity, Mr. Archer,” Claire said, taking a half-step back.
“It’s not charity,” Nathan replied, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding intensity. “It’s justice. And as for Vivienne… the engagement is officially and permanently canceled. She called my lawyers an hour ago demanding a multi-million-dollar settlement, but after what the security cameras caught tonight, she’ll be lucky if she leaves with her clothes.”

Claire blinked, surprised by the finality in his voice. “You’re not going to try to fix it with her?”
“Fix a woman who kicks a defenseless worker and lies to save face?” Nathan shook his head, a faint, weary smile touching his lips. “I spent years surrounding myself with people who cared only about the Archer name. Tonight was the first time in a very long time that I saw someone who actually cared about the truth.”
