Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Sins

The library on the lower floor of the penthouse had been converted into an emergency legal war room.

Four large mahogany tables were covered with open banker's boxes, encrypted laptops, and stacks of financial documents stamped with the red seals of the Southern District of New York and the Northern District of Illinois.

At the center of the room sat Arthur Ross.

Seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling International Legal, Arthur was the supreme corporate and litigious architect who had represented the Valdez empire for four decades. He wore wire-rimmed spectacles, a dark three-piece tweed suit, and an expression of cold, clinical amusement as he examined a twenty-page printout.

Beside him stood Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Lin, a razor-sharp federal prosecutor known for dismantling political machines in Cook County.

"Tessa, please have a seat," Arthur said warmly, pulling out a leather armchair for me.

Leo trotted into the room behind me, holding a small plate with an apple pastry. He climbed onto the chair beside mine, setting his silver robot on the table where it gleamed beneath the brass desk lamp, looking at Arthur with bright, curious eyes.

"What do we have, Arthur?" Damian asked, leaning over the back of my chair.

"Judge Raymond Whitaker has been remarkably sloppy for an appellate jurist," Arthur said, tapping the papers. "For five years, Trent Whitaker has acted as the bagman for his father’s judicial lobbying consortium. Whenever a major commercial real estate developer or maritime freight logistics syndicate had an appeal pending before the Seventh Circuit, Trent’s boutique law firm—Whitaker & Associates—was suddenly retained for 'consulting services.'"

Sarah Lin slid an encrypted digital tablet across the desk toward Damian and me.

LEDGER SUMMARY: WHITAKER & ASSOCIATES LLC PRIMARY CLIENT: MIDWEST TRANSIT INFRASTRUCTURE TRANSACTION LOG: $4,200,000.00 IN UNBACKED LEGAL RETAINERS CORRESPONDING RULINGS: SEVENTH CIRCUIT APPELLATE DOCKET NOS. 19-4401, 21-8890, 23-1102 ALL OPINIONS AUTHORED BY: JUDGE RAYMOND WHITAKER (REVERSING MUNICIPAL FINES & LABOR SAFETY SANCTIONS).

"This is outright bribery," I murmured, my jaw dropping as I skimmed the dates and sums. "He was selling appellate decisions through his son's firm."

"Not just decisions, Miss Navarro," Sarah Lin explained with crisp, lethal precision. "Trent used this illicit capital to settle four separate non-disclosure agreements with young women over the past three years. Two former paralegals, a cocktail server at the Chicago Yacht Club, and an intern at the county clerk's office. Every single one was physically assaulted, intimidated by Detective Paul Vance, and threatened with legal ruin if they went to the press."

A cold, white-hot fury surged through my veins.

The bruises on my face throbbed, but the fear that had gripped me since last night evaporated, replaced by an iron, uncompromising determination.

"They did this to other women," I said, looking directly at Sarah Lin. "And they covered it up every single time."

"Every time," Arthur agreed solemnly. "Until last night. Because Trent picked the wrong dining room, the wrong child, and the wrong woman to strike."

The double oak doors opened, and Mark Vance entered the room, carrying a fresh surveillance manifest.

"Boss," Mark said, nodding toward Damian. "Judge Whitaker just arrived at the Union League Club. He called an emergency breakfast with the chief of police, the county state's attorney, and two senior editors from the Chicago Tribune. He’s preparing a press conference for noon to officially announce criminal charges against Tessa."

Damian didn't flinch.

He slowly straightened his cuffs, his slate-gray eyes locking onto Arthur and Sarah Lin.

"Arthur, execute the federal asset freeze orders," Damian commanded. "Sarah, unseal the grand jury indictments with the chief judge of the district court."

He looked down at me, offering his hand.

"And Tessa?"

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Valdez?"

"Put on your coat," Damian said, his voice ringing with absolute, sovereign authority. "We are going to have lunch at the Union League Club."
