Chapter 8 - The Open Archway

By the following month, the new open archway in the kitchen was fully plastered, painted a warm, inviting cream color, and lined with handcrafted oak shelving built by my own hands.

There were no doors. No deadbolts. No hidden scripts running on the router.

Just rows of cereal boxes, jars of peanut butter, crackers, fruit snacks, and all the little things a five-year-old child should be able to reach without asking permission from anyone.

On a bright Saturday morning in May, the sunlight poured through the kitchen windows, warming the hardwood floors.

Wren stood on her step stool, happily reaching up to grab a box of graham crackers for her mid-morning snack. She didn't look over her shoulder. She didn't hesitate. She just grabbed the box, climbed down safely, and sat at the kitchen table, ripping open the cellophane package with a confident smile.

I sat across from her, drinking my coffee, watching her enjoy a simple snack in absolute peace.

My phone buzzed on the table. It wasn't a lawyer or an investigator this time. It was a text message from an Ohio number.

“Hey Julian. It’s Desmond. My mom got a job at a diner down the road. She's... she's trying to keep her head down. But I got a part-time gig bagging groceries after school. I'm saving up for a bus ticket out here. Can I still call you?”

I stared at the screen for three seconds, a warm, steady pride washing over me.

I typed my reply immediately:

“You can call me whenever you want, Desmond. And whenever you're ready to come out, let me know. I'll buy the ticket myself. There's a room here with your name on it.”

Three dots bubbled on the screen for a moment, followed by a simple, heartfelt reply:

“Thanks, Julian. See you soon.”

I locked the phone, set it face-down on the wooden table, and reached across to grab a graham cracker from Wren’s box.

May you like

She giggled, sliding the box closer to me. "Help yourself, Daddy. There's plenty."

"Thanks, bug," I smiled, eating the cracker in the warm, open sunlight.
