Chapter 3 - The Unsealed Lab

Victoria lunged toward the private service exit behind the head table, her heavy satin gown tearing against the corner of a brass serving cart.

"Get your hands off me!" Victoria screamed, her manicured fingers clawing frantically at the emergency exit bar. "My family owns the pharmaceutical distribution licenses for five states! You have no jurisdiction in this private ballroom!"

Marcus Vance moved with the explosive speed of a former naval operative. He stepped into the doorway, blocking the exit like an immovable granite wall, catching Victoria’s wrists in an iron grip and forcing her hands behind her back.

The heavy steel handcuffs ratcheted shut with two sharp, mechanical clicks.

Victoria thrashed against the restraints, her veil falling to the floor, her makeup smeared with sweat and feral rage as she glared at Clara Miller.

"You pathetic little lab rat!" Victoria hissed, spitting at Clara’s feet. "Your brother died in that warehouse explosion because he was weak! He thought he could take our research to the federal regulators! I should have put you in the ground with him three years ago!"

Clara stepped forward, stopping two feet from the thrashing bride. She reached out with a steady hand, delicately taking the silver pendant from around Victoria’s neck, slipping it into a second evidence bag.

"My brother didn't die in an explosion, Victoria," Clara whispered softly, each word falling like lead onto stone. "He left his master lab journals in a secure vault at the University of Chicago. The journals that contained the complete chemical synthesis records of your monkshood derivatives."

Julian Sterling Sr. was surrounded by two federal marshals at Table Two. As the steel cuffs clicked around the patriarch's wrists, his expensive crystal water glass shattered on the floor, spilling across his polished shoes.

Daniel stood alone in the center of the head table.

He looked at the three hundred guests who were now pushing their chairs back, whispering in shock as news crews and local reporters began gathering outside the glass conservatory windows.

He reached up, unpinned the white bridal boutonnière from his velvet lapel, and threw the flower onto the table, directly into the pool of spilled wine.

"Marcus," Daniel said, turning to his brother. "Clear the hall. Seal the estate. And transport Miss Miller to our private legal headquarters at the tower."

He turned to Clara, his tall frame bowing slightly in profound, unreserved humility.

"You saved my life, Clara," Daniel said, his voice shaking with absolute conviction. "And I will spend whatever resources this family possesses to ensure your brother receives the justice he was denied."
