Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the Empire

By the end of the first week, the corporate restructuring of Sterling Global Logistics was moving at a blinding, unstoppable pace.
Grace didn't sleep much during those initial seven days. She spent eighteen-hour days in the executive suite reviewing maritime freight contracts, renegotiating international terminal leases, and meeting with the federal investigators assigned to dismantle Helena’s network of corrupt proxy accounts.
The employees—from the dockworkers unloading container ships in the Port of Chicago to the administrative clerks in the billing department—felt an immediate, palpable shift in the company culture. The cloud of fear and corporate espionage that had lingered since Robert Sterling’s failing health began was replaced by a fierce, loyal morale. Everyone knew the story of how the true heiress had walked through the lobby with a single flash drive and reclaimed her father’s legacy.
On a rainy Friday evening, Grace stood alone in the grand foyer of the Sterling mansion.
The debris from the shattered family portrait had long since been swept away, but the spot on the walnut floor where it had fallen still seemed slightly bare.
The house was quiet. Too quiet. For five years, it had felt like an occupied territory—a place where she was treated like an uninvited guest in her own home, forced to tiptoe around Helena’s endless social galas and Chloe’s mocking glares.
Chloe had fled the estate two days after Helena’s arrest, packing her designer bags and moving into a modest apartment in the suburbs, realizing that her mother’s criminal enterprise had left her with neither an inheritance nor a social safety net.
Grace walked slowly across the foyer, her hand brushing the polished mahogany banister.
She stopped before the newly repaired family portrait hanging securely on the wall. The frame was solid oak; the glass was pristine and flawless. In the picture, Robert Sterling stood with his arm around a teenage Grace, both of them smiling with genuine, unpretentious joy, the Chicago skyline blurred in the background.
“I kept the promise, Dad,” Grace whispered softly, her fingers touching the cool glass.
Suddenly, a soft knock echoed against the heavy oak front door.
Grace turned, frowning slightly. It was nearly eight o’clock; couriers rarely delivered this late, and her inner circle knew to contact her via secure digital channels.

She walked down the hall and pulled the heavy door open.
Standing on the porch, drenched in the cold Chicago rain, shivering beneath a thin cloth jacket, was Chloe Sterling.
