Chapter 7 - The Arrest in the Hallway

At five o'clock that evening, Julian Mercer returned to St. Jude Memorial under the escort of his two high-priced defense attorneys, attempting to force his way into the administrative server room to delete the internal triage audit logs.

He strode through the main lobby in an expensive wool trench coat, his face flushed with panicked desperation, barking orders at his lawyers.

“We file an emergency restraining order against Dr. Aris immediately!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the marble walls of the grand foyer. “He has no legal authority to seize corporate servers without a full board vote! I am still the sitting Chief Executive Officer!”

The heavy double glass doors of the executive corridor opened.

Dr. Aris stepped into the lobby, flanked by eight armed officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and Captain Frank Callahan.

Beside Dr. Aris walked Dr. Marcus Hayes and three senior surgeons in white coats.

Julian stopped dead in the center of the lobby, right where the coffee cup had shattered twelve hours earlier.

“Aris!” Julian sneered, trying to recover his corporate posture. “You are exceeding your clinical mandate! My legal team is filing a ten-million-dollar civil tort against you personally for corporate interference!”

Dr. Aris did not answer. He simply held up a signed, red-ribboned document bearing the gold seal of the State Attorney General.

“Julian Mercer,” Dr. Aris announced, his voice carrying like an iron bell across the crowded lobby. “By order of the Grand Jury of this County, you are under arrest for First-Degree Attempted Premeditated Murder, Class A Felony Healthcare Fraud, Reckless Manslaughter, and Grand Larceny of Charitable Assets exceeding twenty million dollars.”

Julian’s lead defense attorney took one look at the indictment, closed his briefcase, and took two steps backward, completely abandoning his client.

“What?” Julian shrieked, backing toward the revolving doors. “You can’t arrest me! I have immunity under the corporate hospital charter!”

“Your charter was revoked four hours ago by the sole owner of this institution, Mr. Mercer,” Captain Callahan said, stepping forward.

Two police officers lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s arms, forcing him face-down onto the cold linoleum floor, and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with sharp, concussive snaps.

As they hauled the disgraced CEO to his feet, dozens of nurses, orderlies, medical students, and patients gathered in the lobby, erupting into spontaneous, thunderous applause that shook the very foundations of the building.

Julian glared at Dr. Aris with venomous, desperate hatred as he was dragged toward the exit: “You’ll pay for this, Aris! This hospital will collapse without my venture capital!”

Dr. Aris looked at him with calm, immovable disdain.

“This hospital was built on love, Julian,” Aris replied softly. “And it will stand long after your name is forgotten in a prison cell.”
