Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction of Box 14

By 1:30 p.m., the vestry had been transformed into an active tactical command center.
Luca Santoro walked into the stone room, locking the heavy oak door behind him. Under his arm, he carried an unsealed aluminum Pelican case stamped with the crimson seal of the New York State Police Major Economic Crimes Bureau.
Beside him walked Marcus Thorne, our senior forensic communications engineer.
"The digital telemetry from Box 14 is decrypted, Alessandro," Luca reported, placing the case on the table beside Arthur Ross. "You were right about the satellite channel."
Eleanor Wren connected the high-capacity storage drive to her encrypted terminal. The room was illuminated by the cold blue glow of an eighty-inch digital network diagram that mapped twelve months of clandestine financial and operational routing.
"Let's review the ledger, Eleanor," I commanded, standing beside Vanessa’s chair with my hand resting securely on her shoulder.
"Point one," Eleanor began, tracing her stylus across the illuminated nodes. "The offshore entity Apex Sovereign Trust was registered in Grand Cayman fourteen months ago—three days after Salvatore Moretti’s fatal crash."
"And the controlling beneficial owner?" Arthur Ross asked.
"The bearer shares are held through a secondary holding trust in Zurich called Meridian Maritime LLC," Eleanor revealed. "The sole authorized signatory on the Zurich escrow account is Dominic Morelli."
Vanessa gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes widening in pure, visceral shock. "Dominic...? Your cousin?"
"Dominic has been running the family's logistics committee for six years, Vanessa," I explained, my voice level and colder than arctic ice. "He believed that when my father died, the Commission would name him Don. When my father’s living trust named me as sole sovereign heir, Dominic began constructing a two-front war."
Marcus Thorne zoomed in on the surveillance logs extracted from the estate's perimeter cameras.
"Point two," Marcus reported. "We enhanced the 4K infrared footage from the south garden gate recorded last Tuesday at midnight. The hooded man who delivered the threat envelope to Miss Vanessa was wearing a custom water-repellent trench coat manufactured by Brioni—tailored specifically with an extended left cuff to accommodate an antique oversized chronometer."
"The 1958 Vacheron Constantin," Arthur Ross murmured, his jaw hardening into granite.
"Salvatore’s watch," Luca Santoro confirmed, his weathered face darkening with murderous intent. "The bastard took the watch off your father's body before the ambulance arrived at the crash site."
I leaned over the table, studying the final exhibit on the screen:
OPERATIONAL DIRECTIVE: PHASE 3 (WEDDING RATIFICATION)
TARGET: VANESSA HALE-MORETTI & ALESSANDRO MORETTI
EXECUTION TIMELINE: 3:00 PM // TOAST OF THE ALLIANCE
METHOD: SYNTHETIC DIGOXIN INFUSION IN THE HEIRLOOM CRYSTAL FLUTES // FRAME: MATERNAL REVENGE FOR FATHER'S HOMICIDE.
The entire plot lay bare in blinding, horrifying clarity.
Dominic hadn't simply intended to blackmail Vanessa.
He had intentionally staged the midnight garden meetings so that domestic staff like little Emma would witness Vanessa receiving clandestine envelopes.
During the wedding reception at three o'clock, Dominic planned to poison both the bride and groom's champagne glasses with synthetic digoxin, let me die instantly, allow Vanessa to survive long enough to be arrested for spousal murder, and use her forged "extortion envelopes" as conclusive evidence that she had married me to avenge her father.
With Alessandro dead and Vanessa on trial for capital murder, Dominic Morelli—as managing trustee—would have assumed unconditional, sovereign control over three hundred million dollars in unified maritime assets before the opening bell on Wall Street on Monday morning.
I stood up straight, buttoning my tailored tuxedo jacket over my shoulder holster.
"Arthur," I spoke into the warm silence of the vestry.

"Yes, Alessandro?"
"Unseal the master Delaware receivership files. Notify the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. And tell the kitchen staff to prepare the grand ballroom for the three o'clock toast."
