Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The apartment was painfully sparse. There was no television, no microwave, no comfortable living room furniture—only a secondhand mattress pushed into the corner of the small bedroom, a folding card table covered in medical bills and handwritten budget ledgers, and a stack of cardboard moving boxes half-filled with clothes.

Marcus carried Lily into the apartment a moment later, gently setting her down on her feet as the little girl ran straight to her mother.

“Mommy!” Lily cried, wrapping her arms around Emma’s waist. “I found him! I gave him the red heart just like you said!”

Emma knelt down, gathering her daughter into her arms, pressing her face into Lily’s dark curls while quiet, shuddering sobs wracked her thin frame. “You’re so good, baby... you’re so good. I’m sorry Mommy couldn't go with you... I’m so sorry.”

Daniel stood in the center of the cramped living room, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were white. The anger that had been simmering in his chest since the ballroom now threatened to incinerate everything in its path.

“Emma,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal register that made even his fiercest corporate competitors back away. “Tell me what happened six years ago. Tell me why you left, and tell me what Victoria Vance has to do with any of this.”

Emma looked up from her daughter, her hazel eyes heavy with exhaustion and a deep, abiding terror.

“Six years ago,” Emma began, her voice shaking, “the night before we were supposed to sign our apartment lease... I received a visit.”

“From Victoria?”

“From Victoria,” Emma confirmed. “Back then, she wasn't a society bride in your circle. She was your father’s executive assistant. She came to my door with a folder full of photographs and legal documents.”

Daniel frowned, trying to piece together the fractured memories of the past. “My father’s assistant? Victoria?”

“She told me that your father’s company was facing an aggressive hostile takeover,” Emma explained, her breath catching as she forced the words past her tight throat. “She told me that you were slated to inherit the CEO position, but that your family’s board of directors had strict moral clauses regarding your personal life. She said that my background—my father’s bankruptcy, my lack of social standing—would destroy your career before it even began.”

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. “That’s insane. My father loved you. He never said a word—!”

“Because he didn't know!” Emma interrupted, her voice rising with sudden, fierce energy. “Or maybe he did, but Victoria was acting as his proxy. She told me that if I didn't leave Chicago immediately, quietly, and without a trace, your father would use his legal team to ensure your accounts were frozen, your education was revoked, and you were cast out of the family penniless.”

She pointed a trembling finger toward the stack of medical bills on the folding table.

“And then she told me something else. She told me she was pregnant with your child.”

The room went dead silent.

Daniel stared at Emma as if she had spoken in a foreign language. “Pregnant? Victoria told you she was pregnant with my child?”

“She showed me ultrasound scans,” Emma whispered, sliding down the counter until she sat on the floor, her knees pulled up to her chest. “She told me that you had spent the weekend with her at your family’s estate in the Hamptons. She told me that you and she were destined for a corporate marriage, and that I was nothing more than a college distraction—a temporary amusement you would eventually outgrow.”

Daniel felt as though he had been kicked in the stomach. He dropped to his knees in front of her, grabbing her cold hands. “Emma, look at me. Look at my eyes.”

She raised her gaze.

“I have never touched Victoria Vance,” Daniel said, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying truth. “In all the years she worked for my father, she was an employee. When my father passed away two years ago, she transitioned into our corporate foundation board, and social circles forced us into the same rooms. But I have never loved her. I have never touched her. And she was never pregnant with my child.”

Emma stared at him, searching his face for any sign of deception. She found none—only the raw, bleeding agony of a man who had been manipulated by master chess players using his life as a game board.

“She lied,” Emma whispered.

“She lied,” Daniel confirmed. “She played a long game. She positioned herself near my family, waited for my father to die so there was no one left to contradict her fabricated timeline, and then attached herself to me once my empire was secure enough to satisfy her ambition.”

A bitter, humorless laugh escaped Emma’s lips. “And I believed her. I was so young, so terrified of ruining your life, that I packed a single suitcase, threw away my phone, and ran to a tiny town in Ohio where I gave birth to your daughter in secret.”

“Why didn't you reach out later?” Daniel asked, his voice breaking. “Why didn't you tell me the truth?”

“Because two years ago, when Lily was four, Victoria found me again,” Emma said, her eyes darkening with the memory of pure terror. “She didn't threaten you this time. She threatened Lily. She told me that if I ever made a peep, if I ever tried to contact you or return to Chicago, she would make sure my daughter vanished the way I should have.”

Daniel stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward. The cold, calculating businessman was entirely gone. In his place stood a man whose wrath was large enough to consume a city.

“She threatened my child,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and quiet that even the air in the room seemed to freeze.

“She told me she had eyes everywhere,” Emma whispered, wrapping her arms around herself. “That’s why we moved back here three weeks ago. My health... the doctors found something in my lungs, Daniel. A mass. They said I don't have much time left.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?”

“I’m dying,” Emma said simply, a quiet tear tracing its way down her cheek. “And when I realized I couldn't protect Lily anymore... I knew I had to send her to the only person in the world who could.”
