Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Friday morning arrived with a gray, heavy drizzle that matched the mood inside Daniel’s chest.
He had arranged for Sophie to stay with his sister, Aunt Claire, over the weekend, telling Vanessa it was a special aunt-and-niece sleepover. Vanessa hadn't protested; in fact, she had looked visibly relieved, smiling brightly as she helped pack Sophie’s small pink overnight bag.
“Have a wonderful time, sweetheart,” Vanessa had cooed, kissing the top of Sophie’s head while the little girl stared fixedly at the floor. “Mommy and Daddy will miss you so much.”
The moment Vanessa closed the front door behind Claire and Sophie, the polite domestic charade dissolved entirely.
Daniel stood in the center of the living room, holding his laptop in one hand, waiting for Vanessa to turn around from the coat rack.
She turned, her eyebrows arching in mild annoyance. “Daniel? Why aren't you at the office yet? You’re going to miss your morning briefing.”
“We need to talk, Vanessa,” Daniel said. His voice was no longer trembling. It was the cold, flat tone of a man delivering a death sentence.
Vanessa sighed dramatically, walking toward the kitchen. “Can this wait until tonight? I have charity committee calls all morning, and the caterers are coming by to—urgh!”
She stopped dead.
Daniel had placed his laptop down on the dining table, flipped the screen toward her, and hit play on the clearest, most damning video file in the entire archive—the one where she grabbed Sophie’s arm and threatened to lock her in her bedroom without food.
The audio filled the quiet house.
“If I see one more crayon out of place before your father gets home, you’ll spend the entire weekend locked in your bedroom without dinner. Do you understand me?”
Vanessa froze. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a marble statue. She stared at the moving images on the screen—her own twisted expression, her cruel fingers digging into the child’s flesh, the absolute terror in Sophie’s eyes.
For three seconds, she stood entirely paralyzed. Then, her mask shattered beyond repair.
“Where… where did you get that?” she gasped, her voice pitching up into a hysterical shriek. “You… you spied on me?! In my own home?!”
“In my home, Vanessa,” Daniel corrected, stepping toward her with deliberate, terrifying slowness. “The house I bought before I was foolish enough to put a ring on your finger. The house you turned into a torture chamber for a six-year-old child.”
“She provoked me!” Vanessa screamed, abandoning all pretense of innocence as she lunged toward the table, trying to slam the laptop shut.
Daniel caught her wrist mid-air, his grip tightening around her bones with enough pressure to make her gasp in pain. He didn't squeeze hard enough to break anything, but he held her immobile, forcing her to look into his eyes.
“You never touch her again,” Daniel whispered, his face inches from hers. “You never speak to her, you never look at her, and by the time she comes back on Sunday evening, you will be completely gone from this house.”
“You can’t do that!” Vanessa sobbed, the tears of a cornered predator finally spilling over her cheeks. “I’m your wife! We’re married! You can’t just throw me out on the street—!”
“I’m not throwing you out on the street,” Daniel said, releasing her wrist with a sharp shove that sent her stumbling back against the sideboard. “I’m filing for immediate divorce on grounds of emotional and physical abuse, backed by federal-grade video evidence. Furthermore, my lawyers have already flagged your personal bank accounts—we know about the funds you’ve been siphoning from the household budget to your brother’s failing business.”
Vanessa’s jaw unhinged. She stared at him as if he were a complete stranger. The man she had manipulated, managed, and controlled for four years had suddenly transformed into an executioner.

“You planned this,” she whispered, her voice shaking violently.
“Every single second of it,” Daniel nodded coldly, turning the laptop screen back toward himself and closing it with a sharp snap. “Pack your bags, Vanessa. You have six hours before the sheriff’s deputies arrive to serve the restraining order.”
