Chapter 4 - Shadows Over Pier 42

Midnight at Pier 42 brought a thick Atlantic fog that swallowed the silhouettes of the giant gantry cranes. The salt air was heavy, freezing, and laced with diesel fuel.

Adrian’s black armored Suburban rolled to a halt behind a row of rusted shipping containers three hundred yards from the abandoned harbormaster’s tower. The engine purred into silence.

"You should have stayed in the car," Adrian muttered, checking the slide on his suppressed SIG Sauer P320.

Claire, dressed in a black tactical windbreaker and heavy boots, checked the strap on her small shoulder bag. "The combination lock is seized with salt corrosion. You need to know the specific rhythm to turn the tumbler or the internal pins will drop and freeze permanently. Unless you brought a plasma torch and two hours to spare, you need me."

Marcus turned from the driver’s seat, a customized submachine gun resting across his lap. "Perimeter's quiet, Boss. But thermal's picking up heat blooms inside warehouse four. Two hundred yards south."

"Victor’s watchdogs," Adrian said coldly. "He knows the value of Pier 42 even if he didn't know about Claire’s safe. Marcus, take team two and flank the perimeter road. If anyone steps out of warehouse four, put them to sleep quietly."

"Understood." Marcus slipped out into the fog, dissolving like a wraith into the mist along with four black-clad security operators.

Adrian stepped out of the Suburban and reached back, catching Claire by the hand to help her down into the damp gravel. The cold wind whipped her hair across her face. Adrian pulled up the hood of her jacket, his fingers brushing her cheek with a brief, possessive tenderness that didn't escape her notice.

"Stay behind me. If I tell you to run, you don't look back. You head for the water gate. Got it?"

"Nobody is running, Adrian," she said softly, but she kept close to his back.

They moved like ghosts beneath the towering iron legs of Crane Seven. The gantry loomed hundreds of feet into the overcast sky, groaning under the gusts of offshore wind. The harbormaster’s shack was a squat, concrete bunker built into the foundation of the pier, its windows boarded with weathered plywood.

Adrian pushed the heavy iron door open. It swung on greased hinges—Marcus had swept it an hour prior.

Inside, the air smelled of mildew, rotten paper, and dry brine. Adrian flicked on a low-lumen tactical red flashlight, illuminating peeling green paint and abandoned steel desks.

"Over here," Claire whispered, leading him toward the back storage alcove.

Behind an overturned metal filing cabinet stood an old circuit breaker box from the 1960s. Claire pulled the rusted iron latch. The door opened with a gritty screech. Behind the dead ceramic fuses was a square cast-iron safe face, no larger than a shoebox, completely hidden inside the wall cavity.

Claire knelt, her fingers working the brass dial.

*Click. Turn left past forty. Click. Double-tap right.*

She tapped the casing with the heel of her palm twice, then twisted the lever. With a dull mechanical clunk, the heavy door swung out.

Inside sat a small, military-grade Pelican hard case.

Claire grabbed it, her eyes flashing with victory. "Got it."

Before Adrian could speak, a sharp crack echoed through the concrete structure.

A high-caliber bullet punched through the wooden doorframe two inches above Claire's head, showering her hair in splinters and pulverized concrete.

"Down!" Adrian roared, slamming his body over hers, driving them both into the reinforced recess beneath the safe alcove as automatic fire tore through the room.

Plywood disintegrated. Glass shattered into thousands of diamond fragments. Adrian drew his weapon, firing three controlled shots through the doorway into the fog. A scream of pain cut through the mist, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the deck outside.

"Marcus!" Adrian barked into his collar comm. "We're engaged!"

"Ambush on the south road, Boss!" Marcus’s voice crackled through static, punctuated by rapid bursts of gunfire. "They had a second crew staging in a cold-storage trailer! We're pinned down by heavy fire—we're cutting our way through to you now!"

"Hold them off the road!" Adrian shouted.

He looked down at Claire. She was pinned beneath his chest, her face inches from his, the hard case clutched desperately against her ribs. Her eyes were wide, but there was no panic—only fierce, burning resolve.

"Are you hit?" he demanded.

"No! I'm fine!"

"Good," Adrian breathed, his eyes blazing with a savage, predatory fire she had never seen before. "Because we're not dying in a basement."

Footsteps pounded outside. Two men in tactical vests breached the threshold, weapons raised.

Adrian didn't wait. He surged from the alcove with lethal speed. His first shot caught the lead mercenary in the throat. As the second man tried to bring his rifle to bear, Adrian closed the distance, grabbed the barrel, shoved it upward as it fired into the ceiling, and drove his combat knife into the man’s armpit beneath his armor plate.

The man collapsed with a wet gasp.

Adrian stood over them, chest heaving, rain blowing through the shattered door. He turned to Claire, holding out a hand slick with rain.

"Let's go."

Claire took his hand, pulling herself up. But as they reached the door, a low groan came from the man on the floor.

Adrian pressed the muzzle of his gun to the man's forehead. "Who gave the order to stake out Pier 42?"

The wounded man spat blood, his eyes wild with agony. "Hale... and Carlotti. You're already dead, Moretti. Carlotti's crew... they crossed the Tobin Bridge twenty minutes ago. They're surrounding your brownstone."

Adrian froze.

Claire’s face went completely bloodless. "Adrian... my sister. You said you moved my family's keepsakes to Beacon Hill. But my sister... Emma came into town on the midnight train from New York. I told her to pick up my spare keys from the brownstone concierge!"

Adrian's heart stopped.

Victor hadn't just moved against the docks. He had allied with the Carlotti crime family to slaughter everything inside Adrian's home.
