Chapter 3 - The Architecture of the Bridge

Luca leaned over the mahogany drafting table, his large hands gripping the carved wood until his knuckles turned bone-white.
"Show me the bridge manifest, Arthur," Luca commanded, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal, subterranean granite.
Arthur Ross tapped his wireless stylus against the screen, illuminating a detailed forensic collision reconstruction prepared by the National Transportation Safety Board:
INCIDENT: ASHWOOD BRIDGE VEHICULAR ASSAULT // NOVEMBER 13, 2023
VICTIMS: ELENA MORETTI (DECEASED), SOPHIA MORETTI (SURVIVED)
SUSPECT VEHICLE: FREIGHTLINER SEMI-TRUCK // APEX LOGISTICS GROUP LLC
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: DOMINIC MORELLI & STERLING INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS ($85,000,000.00 SUCCESSION TRUST).
"Here is the architecture of the assassination, Luca," Arthur Ross explained, tracing the red digital flow lines across the display. "Three years ago, your late wife, Elena, discovered that Dominic Morelli was systematically embezzling eighty-five million dollars from the Moretti Generational Maritime Trust through an unlisted private equity vehicle in Grand Cayman."
"Elena was driving to the federal courthouse in Chicago with the master audit records when the truck struck her sedan," I realized aloud, looking up from Sophia’s sleeping face.
"Exactly, Hannah," Arthur confirmed with deep, solemn respect. "Dominic hired the driver to run Elena's car through the bridge railing into thirty feet of freezing water, believing that both Elena and four-year-old Sophia would drown before rescue boats could be deployed. But you were driving home from your nursing shift. You jumped off the embankment, dove into the river, broke the rear windshield with a tire iron, and pulled Sophia to the surface."
Marcus stepped forward, placing a secondary red-tabbed dossier on the desk.
"When Dominic discovered that Sophia had survived," Marcus revealed, "he realized that if the child ever identified the woman who pulled her out, or if Hannah Carter delivered Elena's recovered locket to Luca, the entire conspiracy would collapse. So he manufactured the cease-and-desist letter, blacklisted Hannah from every medical facility in Illinois, and convinced you that Sophia’s paralysis was a permanent, irreversible consequence of your own negligence."
Luca closed his eyes for a single, heavy second.
For three years, he had lived in an emotional fortress of guilt and grief, believing that his enemies had targeted his wife because of his own criminal reputation, watching his paralyzed child sit in silence while he gave thirty million dollars a year to the very foundation Dominic managed.
He opened his eyes. The slate-gray irises were cold as glacial ice.
"Arthur," Luca spoke into the quiet room.

"Yes, Luca?"
"Unseal the master Delaware receivership warrants at dawn. Freeze every commercial line of credit, every logistics lease, and every private bank account tied to Dominic Morelli. And notify the United States Attorney’s Office that the Moretti family will be delivering the master Grand Cayman ledgers at sunrise."
