Chapter 8 - The Grand Jury and the Federal Ledger

Three months later, the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago and the United States District Court in Brooklyn convened for the synchronized grand jury indictments in the matter of The United States versus Marcus Vance, Thomas Reed, and Apex Maritime Logistics.

The proceedings drew intense national media coverage, exposing the massive, multi-state corporate espionage, embezzlement, and racketeering network that had attempted to seize control of the Eastern Seaboard's deep-water container lanes.

Vincent and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery in Brooklyn, dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly. Lucy remained at the Long Island estate, playing safely in the sunlit gardens with Mrs. Gable and Barnaby, a playful golden retriever puppy Vincent had adopted for her fifth birthday.

Marcus Vance and Thomas Reed sat at the defense table in matching orange federal inmate jumpsuits.

The transformation was absolute.

Without his bespoke suits, private yachts, and manufactured arrogance, Marcus Vance looked like a hollow, broken phantom, his silver hair unkempt, his hands and ankles bound in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step. Beside him, Thomas Reed sat with his head bowed low, weeping silently in total, unmitigated ruin.

Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented eighty-four exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the micro-film extracted from the Patek Philippe watch, the decrypted offshore banking flowcharts, and Thomas Reed's comprehensive, sworn confession.

The grand jury took exactly eighteen minutes to return a true bill across all forty-six felony counts.

Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:

"Marcus Vance, for the crimes of Federal Interstate Racketeering, Corporate Extortion, and Grand Maritime Larceny, you are hereby sentenced to Thirty-Five Years at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute without the possibility of early parole."

The gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

"Thomas Reed is sentenced to Eighteen Years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville."

Marcus and Thomas were hauled to their feet by armed federal marshals, dragged down the subterranean holding corridor as the entire courtroom watched in stunned, condemning silence.

Vincent and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Special Agent Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright winter sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
