Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Gambit

Dawn broke over Chicago in a wash of pale, bruised violet.
The peaceful intimacy of the penthouse was shattered at six-thirty by the shrill ring of Dominic’s red secure phone.
Dominic, who had been sitting at the breakfast bar watching Clara type away on her laptop, answered on the first ring. He listened for twenty seconds without speaking. His posture, which had softened over the previous hours, snapped back into the rigid, lethal carriage of a warlord.
“Where?” Dominic demanded.
Another pause.
“Send four teams. Seal the borders. If a single hair on her head is harmed, I will personally flay Julian Vance alive.” He hung up the phone with deliberate, terrifying control.
Clara looked up from her screen, her fingers freezing over the keys. An icy dread settled in the pit of her stomach. “Dominic? What happened?”
Dominic walked toward her, his face an emotionless mask of marble. “Julian Vance slipped through the federal net at four this morning. Richard Hayes made bail through a corrupt municipal judge half an hour later.”
Clara gasped. “How? The federal warrants—”
“Vance has judges on his payroll who owe their seats to his family,” Dominic said, resting his hands on the back of her chair. “They are desperate, Clara. And desperate men do not play by corporate rules.”
He hesitated, a rare flicker of pain crossing his eyes.
“Richard had an encrypted copy of your personnel file,” Dominic said quietly. “He knew you had a sister.”
The world stopped spinning. The air left Clara’s lungs in a violent rush.
“Fiona,” she whispered, her vision tunneling into black dots. “Oh God. Fiona. The twins. They’re in Indianapolis. They have nothing to do with this!”
Clara scrambled to her feet, knocking her chair backward. She grabbed her phone from the counter, her hands shaking so violently she couldn't enter her passcode. “I have to call her. I have to tell her to run—”
Dominic caught her hands in his, pulling her against his chest to stop her shaking. “Clara! Look at me!”
“Dominic, please!” she sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. “You don't understand! My sister is everything to me! She has two little boys! If Richard hurts them because of me—”
“Listen to me!” Dominic’s voice boomed through the penthouse with absolute authority. “Matteo and eight of my best men are already five minutes outside Indianapolis. They were dispatched two hours ago when Richard’s bail was posted. They are extracting Fiona, her husband, and the boys as we speak. They will be placed in an underground bunker in southern Indiana before Vance’s men even cross the state line.”
Clara looked up at him, her chest heaving, searching his dark eyes for any trace of false reassurance. “You… you knew?”
“I anticipate,” Dominic said fiercely. “I told you that you are under my protection. That extends to the people you love. Fiona is safe, Clara. I swear it on my mother’s soul.”
A ragged sob escaped Clara’s throat, and she buried her face in Dominic’s shoulder. He held her tight, his hand stroking the back of her head with fierce, protective devotion.
“Now,” Dominic whispered into her hair, his voice turning deadly cold. “Vance sent a message through my encrypted channel three minutes ago. He and Richard are holding out at the Aegis Capital logistics hub at the Port of Indiana on the lakefront. They have fifty armed mercenaries and the master cryptographic key to the Aegis offshore reserves.”
Clara pulled back, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of the oversized sweater. The terror was still there, but beneath it, an ancient, incandescent fury was beginning to ignite.
“The master key?” she asked, sniffing.
“Yes,” Dominic said. “Vance thinks he can negotiate. He wants safe passage to South America and ten million dollars in bearer bonds, or he triggers a dead-man's wipe on the entire server, destroying the evidence that links him to the Delaware fraud and leaving Gallagher and Hayes’s investors holding the bag.”
Clara walked slowly back to her laptop.
She looked at the lines of hexadecimal code scrolling across her secondary screen. A cold, ruthless smile touched the corners of her lips—a smile that made Dominic’s eyebrows lift in fascination.
“He thinks the cryptographic key is on his physical server,” Clara said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
“Isn't it?”
“Richard designed the architecture, Dominic,” Clara said, her fingers dancing across the keyboard with blinding speed. “And Richard is lazy. He never creates a master key from scratch; he uses a modified SHA-256 algorithm based on his first corporate tax filing in 1998.”
She tapped the enter key with a sharp, definitive click.
A progress bar bloomed across the screen in bright cyan. *Access Granted: Aegis Master Protocol.*
“I don't need his physical server,” Clara said, turning the laptop toward Dominic. Her eyes burned with a lethal brilliance. “I just mirrored his root directory. I am inside their system right now. While they’re sitting in that warehouse waiting for your bearer bonds, I can drain every single dollar out of Vance’s offshore accounts, revoke his maritime transport licenses, and brick their encrypted communications.”
Dominic stared at the screen, then looked at Clara. A slow, wicked grin spread across his face.
“Clara Bennett,” Dominic said, pulling his Sig Sauer from the holster and checking the magazine with a sharp *clack*. “You are the most terrifying creature I have ever met.”
“Take me with you,” Clara said.
Dominic paused, his eyes narrowing. “No. It’s a war zone.”
“Richard Hayes stole my life for five years,” Clara said, stepping forward until she was inches from his chest, her chin raised, unyielding. “He tried to use you to murder me. He sent men to terrorize my sister. I am not going to sit in a glass tower while other people fight my battle. I want to look him in the eye when his world turns to ash.”
Dominic studied her for five long seconds. He saw no hesitation. He saw no fear. He saw a partner standing beside him in the storm.

“Get your coat, Ms. Bennett,” Dominic said.
