Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Past

The fallout from the night at the docks was swift and decisive.

By the end of the week, the federal indictments against Vincent Moretti and his inner circle were splashed across the front page of every major newspaper from Boston to New York. The headlines screamed of a massive maritime smuggling ring dismantled overnight, thanks to anonymous tips provided to federal investigators.

Nobody mentioned Corsini House. In the underworld and the upper echelons of Boston society, Julian Corsini remained what he had always been: a shadow that could not be touched.

Inside the mansion, however, the heavy, suffocating silence was gone.

Mrs. Abernathy had taken to humming while she baked, and the third-floor hallway no longer smelled of dust and old iron. The private study of Dominic Corsini had been cleared out; the old ledgers and dark secrets were packed away into secure government archives, leaving behind a sunlit, airy room that Julian had converted into a private dance studio for me.

It was a Tuesday afternoon when I stood in front of the newly installed wall-to-wall mirrors, wearing a simple black leotard and pink ballet slippers.

The door opened quietly, and Julian walked in. He was wearing a casual gray pullover and dark jeans, looking more like a normal man in his forties than a syndicate kingpin. He leaned against the doorframe, watching me through the glass as I finished a complex sequence of grand allegro leaps.

When I landed softly on the polished wood floor, I turned and caught his eye in the mirror.

"You're improving," Julian noted, pushing off the doorframe and walking slowly toward me. "Though your landing on the third jump was slightly heavy. You're favoring your left ankle."

I rolled my eyes, grabbing a small towel from the nearby bench to wipe the sweat from my forehead. "You have been watching too many ballet masterclasses on YouTube, Mr. Corsini. Next thing I know, you'll be giving me a pop quiz on terminology."

Julian stopped right in front of me, his hands sliding naturally around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. His touch was warm, solid, and utterly grounding.

"I don't need YouTube," he murmured, his breath brushing my hair. "I have the only dancer who matters right here in my house."

I leaned my head back against his shoulder, looking up at him through the mirror. "It feels strange, you know. Waking up and not worrying about collection agencies, or medical bills, or whether my sister is going to dump another crisis in my lap."

Julian’s expression softened, the hard lines of his face melting into something deeply tender. "Your past isn't something to run from, Sadie. It's what made you strong enough to throw a metal bucket at Thomas's shins."

I laughed, turning around in his arms to face him directly. "Speaking of Thomas... what's happening with him and Doyle?"

"Doyle is currently negotiating a plea deal in a federal holding facility in upstate New York," Julian said calmly, his gray eyes darkening slightly. "He'll spend the next twenty years reflecting on the value of loyalty. As for Thomas... he's in Montana, exactly where I said. Chopping wood and tending horses. He'll live a quiet life. It's more mercy than he deserved."

I placed my hands flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath the soft cashmere. "You're getting soft in your old age, Corsini."

Julian raised an eyebrow, a wicked, charming smirk playing at the corners of his lips. "Soft? Let me remind you how soft I am."

Before I could retort, he scooped me up effortlessly into his arms, spinning me around in a wide, joyful circle that made me shriek with laughter—a sound that echoed off the high ceilings of the ballroom, completely banishing every ghost that had ever haunted Corsini House.
