Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal beneath the Undercarriage

Thomas Reed froze at the threshold of the double mahogany doors.
The air in the master study plummeted instantly below zero. The warmth from the roaring fireplace seemed to evaporate, replaced by the suffocating, electric stillness that always preceded an execution in House Romano.
Alessandro did not move. His hands remained flat against the leather desk blotter.
"What did you say, Lily?" Alessandro asked.
His voice was terrifyingly calm—the quiet, measured cadence he used before dismantling a rival syndicate.
Lily tilted her head, tapping her red crayon against the paper. "When I was looking for my blue ball near the big black car at six o'clock, a man in a black jacket was lying on the ground under the back wheels. He had a shiny metal box with a red spider on it. And Mr. Thomas has the same red spider on his lock."
Thomas Reed let out a soft, nervous chuckle, turning back toward the desk with his hands held out in an open, innocent gesture. "Don Alessandro, children have such wonderful, wild imaginations. This is a standard security monogram for the biometric latch on my portfolio—"
"Set the briefcase on the desk, Thomas," Alessandro commanded softly.
Thomas hesitated for half a second.
Marco Costa moved with blinding, apex predator speed.
Before the estate manager could take a breath, Marco’s iron grip clamped around Thomas’s wrist, twisting the joint with brutal, mechanical leverage, forcing the leather briefcase flat onto the center of Alessandro’s desk.
Alessandro stood up. He did not draw a weapon. He tapped his private intercom button.
"Dr. Lin. Bring the electronic diagnostic scanner and the undercarriage sweep team to the south courtyard immediately."
Ten minutes later, the grand master study was transformed into an active tactical forensics suite.
Dr. Sarah Lin, the family’s private forensic specialist, knelt beside Alessandro’s desk with a military-grade signal analyzer. She ran the magnetic wand across the latch of Thomas’s briefcase.
The device emitted a high-pitched, warbling tone: Encrypted Transponder Detected.
Simultaneously, Marco’s radio crackled with a frantic report from the garage mechanics:
"Boss! We swept the rear axle of the Maybach. We found a magnetized military GPS beacon and a remote hydraulic brake-line bleeder valve clamped to the secondary fluid reservoir! It was wired with an encrypted cellular detonator!"
Dr. Lin used a fine titanium pick to pop the false lining of Thomas’s briefcase.
Inside, resting on a bed of anti-static foam, lay a matching encrypted radio transmitter and a USB drive bearing the stamped crimson insignia of The Red Arachnid—the private mercenary black-ops unit contracted by Marcus Vance in Boston.
Alessandro looked down at the transmitter.

His slate-gray eyes turned to glacial stone.
"You wired my car, Thomas," Alessandro whispered. "You planned to drain my brakes on the expressway bridge during my trip to Manhattan this afternoon."
