Chapter 3 - The Vault of Secrets

The silence that followed Emily’s words was heavy, suffocating, and absolute. The buzzing of the patio flies against the glass sliding door sounded like a chainsaw in the quiet room. Patricia stood frozen, her lower lip trembling slightly, her previous composure completely obliterated.
Daniel took a slow step toward his sister, his brow furrowed in deep confusion. "What are you talking about, Emily? What do you mean this isn't the first time?"
Emily didn't answer immediately. She walked forward, holding her phone out like a piece of critical forensic evidence, and pressed play on a video file. The small screen lit up, projecting clear, high-definition footage of the exact corner of the living room where the gift table stood.
Everyone in the room crowded closer. On the screen, the timestamp read six months earlier—during a family Thanksgiving dinner at the same estate.
The video showed little Lily, then only four and a half years old, standing near a side table holding a small silver salt shaker. Patricia walked into the frame, her face instantly twisting into the same cold, pinched expression she wore today. Without a word, Patricia grabbed Lily’s arm so hard the little girl flinched, hissed something into the child's ear that made Lily cry out in pain, and then shoved her backward against the wall. The video captured the audio clearly: “If you ever touch my things again, you clumsy little brat, I’ll make sure your father never lets you back in this house.”
Daniel stared at the screen, his entire body going rigid. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking ashen and hollow. He turned his head slowly to look at his mother, his dark eyes wide with a mixture of horror and betrayal.
"Mom..." Daniel whispered, the word barely escaping his lips. "You... you pushed her? You threatened her?"
"It's edited!" Patricia shrieked, her voice cracking as she lunged forward, trying to swat the phone out of Emily’s hand. "That's artificial intelligence! They're conspiring against me! Your sister has always been jealous of me, and this woman—this woman poisoned your mind!"
Marcus and Scott stepped in quickly, blocking their mother from attacking Emily. The brothers exchanged stunned, uneasy glances. They had always known their mother was difficult, demanding, and hyper-critical, but physical abuse toward her own granddaughter crossed a line they never imagined she would cross.
Clara knelt down beside the armchair, pulling Lily out from her hiding spot. She wrapped her arms around the trembling child, pressing Lily’s face into her neck. "It's okay, baby. Mommy's here. You're safe now," Clara murmured, kissing the top of Lily's head while hot, angry tears spilled down her own cheeks.
Daniel fell to his knees in front of his daughter and wife, his hands trembling as he reached out tentatively toward Lily. "Lili-bug... I am so sorry. I didn't know. I swear to God, I had no idea."
Lily shrank back slightly, pressing tighter into Clara’s chest, showing a wariness of her father that broke Daniel’s heart into a thousand jagged pieces.
Emily didn't stop with just one video. She swiped again, bringing up a series of text message screenshots between Patricia and a former family nanny who had mysteriously quit a year prior. The texts detailed Patricia’s explicit instructions: “Keep the brat out of my sight when I visit, and if she cries, lock her in the pantry until Daniel arrives. She needs to learn her place.”
"She didn't just do it at Thanksgiving, Daniel," Emily said, her voice shaking with righteous anger as she looked at her older brothers. "She’s been terrorizing Lily every single time we leave her here alone for even ten minutes. She hates that you married Clara, and she’s taking it out on an innocent little girl."
Patricia let out a feral screech of absolute defeat. She stopped trying to defend herself and instead pointed a claw-like finger at everyone in the room. "Get out! All of you! Get out of my house right now! You ungrateful, pathetic excuses for a family!"

Daniel stood up slowly. The grief on his face had been entirely replaced by a cold, terrifying fury—the same look Clara had seen only a handful of times in their twelve years together. He looked at his mother not with anger, but with the hollow, definitive gaze of a man whose umbilical cord had finally been severed by a pair of rusty shears.
"We are leaving," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And you will never, ever see Lily again."
