Chapter 3 - The Audit of Hanover Street

At 5:45 a.m., the grand two-story library of the Baron estate was converted into an active tactical and forensic command center.

A roaring fire crackled in the river-stone hearth, illuminating floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and the thirty-foot drafting table where Elias’s father had designed the first automated container berths for Boston Harbor forty years earlier.

Sitting around the table were Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling Legal and the Baron family’s supreme litigator—accompanied by Marcus and Chief Investigator David Sterling from the State Special Financial Crimes Bureau.

Spread across the table were fifty red-tabbed banker's boxes containing unsealed corporate charters, decrypted bank manifests from Grand Cayman and Zurich, and the original 2012 port authority survey logs retrieved from Thomas Prescott's ledger.

"The forensic reconstruction is absolute, Elias," Arthur Ross reported, tracing his fountain pen across an illuminated digital network diagram on his tablet. "Julian Baron didn't act alone. Look at the financial routing nodes established between 2012 and last Thursday."

Elias stood behind the table, dressed in an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, sipping black coffee from a porcelain cup.

"Show me the collateral, Arthur," Elias commanded.

"Point one," Arthur explained. "Julian Baron used Apex Harbor Holdings to encumber sixty percent of the deepwater commercial berths along the Mystic River, pledging them as security for forty million dollars in predatory mezzanine loans from an offshore syndicate in Nassau."

"And the manufactured debt against the Prescott family?"

"Thomas Prescott never owed a single dollar to the maritime union," Arthur stated, his jaw tightening in fury. "Julian’s enforcers forged a promissory note using Thomas's forged digital signature three weeks after the warehouse fire. They have been extorting Adeline for six hundred dollars a month for eight years, using the money to pay the interest on Julian’s private luxury real estate in Palm Beach."

Marcus stepped forward, dropping an encrypted satellite tracking terminal onto the wood.

"We located Charlotte Prescott twenty minutes ago, Mr. Baron," Marcus reported. "She is being held on the third floor of an abandoned cold-storage warehouse at Berth 14 in Charlestown—a facility titled under Julian Baron’s private logistics shell."

Elias set his coffee cup down with a sharp, definitive clink.

He checked the slide on his customized Kimber .45, holstering the weapon beneath his tailored wool jacket.

"Arthur," Elias spoke, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal, subterranean iron.

"Yes, Elias?"

"Execute the emergency freeze on all Apex Harbor accounts with the Delaware Chancery Court at dawn. Prepare the master title restitution deeds for the Prescott estate. And tell the tactical convoy to stage outside Berth 14 in twelve minutes."
