Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the First National Bank

At 9:00 a.m. on Monday, the executive boardroom of the First National Bank of Oak Creek was convening for an emergency loan committee session.
Seated at the head of the polished walnut conference table was Julian Mercer—Vanessa’s thirty-four-year-old brother and the managing director of Mercer Commercial Capital.
Julian wore an immaculate bespoke gray suit, sporting a gold Rolex Submariner, sipping black espresso while reviewing a seventy-page commercial mortgage portfolio. Flanking him were two junior investment analysts and the bank's regional lending officer, David Thorne.
"The transaction is fully collateralized, David," Julian announced smoothly, tapping his Montblanc pen against the parchment. "Thomas Vance’s timber reserves in the northern county are valued at forty-five million dollars. With Vanessa executing the secondary power-of-attorney proxy this morning, we are requesting an immediate twelve-million-dollar bridge facility to execute the Canadian distribution merger."
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding, concussive crash.
The room fell into an immediate, paralyzed silence.
Stepping into the boardroom was Thomas Vance.
I was not wearing the bruised, exhausted posture of a grieving widower. I wore an immaculate, custom-tailored dark charcoal wool three-piece suit, my posture straight as an iron spar, carrying my father’s vintage leather surveyor’s binder under my arm.
Walking beside me was Arthur Ross, followed by Detective Marcus Vance and three armed federal investigators from the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Task Force.
Julian Mercer set his gold pen down with a sharp clatter, his eyebrows drawing together in a mask of patrician irritation. "Thomas? What is the meaning of this dramatic intrusion? This is a closed institutional credit session—"
"This building sits on commercial ground leased from the Vance Family Trust, Julian," I said, my voice carrying across the high-ceilinged room with the clear, ringing authority of a sovereign landholder. "And your credit facility was terminated at eight-thirty this morning."
Arthur Ross stepped forward, dropping a thick, red-tabbed federal dossier directly onto the mahogany table right beside Julian’s espresso cup.
"Julian Mercer," Arthur announced, his deep baritone booming through the silent room. "You are formally served with a federal grand jury indictment regarding forty-two counts of enterprise wire fraud, conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, and the felonious forgery of sovereign state deeds."
Julian’s face drained of every drop of color, leaving his skin the sallow, grayish hue of wet drywall. He looked around at the bank directors, who were already pushing their chairs back, visibly dissociating themselves from the table.
"This is an absurd civil overreach!" Julian stammered, jumping to his feet. "Vanessa holds full power of attorney! She signed the collateral pledges!"
"Vanessa signed those pledges in a solitary holding cell at the County Correctional Center, Julian," I replied, stepping closer until my shadow completely swallowed his side of the table. "A holding cell where you will be joining her before the noon news cycle."

Two federal marshals in tactical blazers stepped through the doorway, unholstering heavy stainless-steel handcuffs.
As Julian was secured and led through the executive lobby in stunned, breathless silence, his bespoke leather loafers dragging across the marble floorboards, the banking directors watched the final, catastrophic collapse of the Mercer conspiracy under the morning sun.
