Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Port

At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, the central shipping terminal of the Port of Chicago was bathed in crisp, golden autumn sunlight.

Under an emergency executive decree issued by the Vance Maritime Board, three large commercial freight vessels were docked along Pier 4, their decks lined with three hundred dockworkers, logistics engineers, and security personnel.

Standing on the elevated concrete gantry overlooking the harbor were Clara, Leo, and Victoria.

Clara stepped up to the podium, looking out over the sea of working men who formed the true heart of her father’s maritime empire.

"Three years ago, this port was threatened by predators who believed that a family name gave them the right to steal your pensions and terrorize our house," Clara began, her clear, resonant voice carrying across the water through the public address system.

The longshoremen listened with rapt, breathless attention.

"Today, we declare that the Port of Chicago belongs to honor, to labor, and to the fierce, unconditional protection of our children," Clara continued, her eyes shining with unshakeable resolve. "Every stolen dollar has been returned, every worker’s healthcare is permanently guaranteed, and thirty percent of all future maritime profits are endowed into the Vance Worker Healthcare and Educational Trust."

The entire harbor erupted into a deafening, thunderous roar of cheers and sirens.

Three massive container ships sounded their deep brass horns across the bay—a low, booming salute of strength, integrity, and unyielding progress that echoed off the Chicago skyline.

The dockworkers threw their hardhats into the air, raising their fists in a triumphant, unified salute to Clara and her son.

Leo stood at the railing, waving his hand with a bright, fearless smile, his heart overflowing with boundless joy as the sea spray misted against his face.

Victoria wrapped her arm gently around Clara’s shoulders, laughing with pure happiness as the entire assembly cheered beneath the clear morning sky.
