Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at dawn

By 3:00 AM, the industrial apartment on Maple Street had been completely transformed.
Private medical staff, personally dispatched by Beatrice Sterling, had converted the cramped living room into a fully equipped mini-ICU. An oxygen concentrator hummed softly in the corner, pumping clean, pressurized air into Chloe’s compromised lungs, while a specialized doctor monitored her vitals.
Maya was fast asleep in a plush, velvet-lined travel bed that Beatrice’s security team had hastily brought up from the armored car, clutching her stuffed rabbit and her new silver pendant.
In the small, cramped kitchen, Beatrice Sterling sat on a wooden stool, stirring a cup of hot chamomile tea. Across from her sat her eldest son, Julian, and his wife, Evelyn. They had been dragged here by Beatrice’s guards less than an hour after the gala ended, bundled into separate town cars and driven straight to the industrial district.
Evelyn looked pathetic. Her expensive emerald gown was stained with mud from the wet pavement outside, her hair was disheveled, and she was shivering violently—not from the cold, but from the raw, unadulterated terror of what was coming.
"Julian," Evelyn hissed, nudging her husband's arm. "Say something. Tell her we were only trying to protect the family fortune. Tell her Chloe was unstable—"
Julian didn't look up. He sat with his head bowed, staring at his expensive Italian leather shoes, entirely broken. He knew his mother too well; he knew that the empire he had spent a lifetime waiting to inherit had just slipped through his fingers forever.
The door to the bedroom clicked open.
Beatrice stood up, smoothing the front of her expensive velvet wrap. She walked into the kitchen, her eyes cold enough to freeze boiling water. She stopped three feet from Evelyn and Julian.
"Mother," Julian began, his voice trembling. "Please... let's talk about this in the morning. At the estate. Not in this... this hovel."
"This hovel," Beatrice said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register, "is where my daughter and my granddaughter spent ten years freezing and starving because your wife decided she wanted to be the sole heir to the Sterling name."
Evelyn tried to puff out her chest, attempting one final, desperate defense. "She ran away, Beatrice! You know she did! She was a rebellious teenager—"
"Silence, you venomous bitch," Beatrice snapped, cutting Evelyn off with a viciousness that made the younger woman flinch.
Beatrice pulled a heavy gold-plated fountain pen and a leather-bound legal document from the deep pocket of her wrap. She tossed them onto the wobbly wooden table, right in front of Julian.
"What... what is this?" Julian whispered, his hands hovering over the paper.
"That," Beatrice stated, "is the complete and unconditional revocation of your executive powers as CEO of Sterling Industries. It is also an immediate disinheritance document."
Julian gasped, grabbing the paper. "Disinheritance?! Mother, you can't be serious! You’re cutting me off over a girl who hasn't been here in twenty-five years?!"
"She is my daughter. And her daughter is my blood," Beatrice replied, her voice ringing with absolute, sovereign authority. "Every share of stock assigned to your name, every trust fund, every real estate deed tied to the primary Sterling lineage is hereby transferred to Chloe Sterling and her legal heirs. You and your wife will receive a standard severance stipend of two thousand dollars a month—just enough to rent a modest apartment in this very neighborhood."
Evelyn shrieked, jumping to her feet and knocking her chair backward onto the linoleum. "Two thousand dollars?! Are you insane?! We run in high society! We have debts! We have loans! You can't reduce us to poverty over a laundress and her brat!"
"Watch me," Beatrice said coldly. She turned to the two armed security guards standing by the apartment door. "Thomas. Escort Mr. and Mrs. Vance out of this building. Throw their luggage onto the sidewalk. And ensure they are permanently blocked from entering any Sterling property, corporate office, or bank account associated with our name."
"Mother, please!" Julian cried out, lunging forward, but Thomas’s heavy hand clamped onto his shoulder like an iron vice.
"Get your hands off me! Mother—!"
Julian’s desperate pleas were cut short as the guards dragged him and the hysterical Evelyn out of the apartment, slamming the wooden door shut behind them.

The kitchen fell into a profound, heavy quiet.
Beatrice stood alone for a moment, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Then, she turned and walked quietly back into the bedroom where her daughter was resting.
