Chapter 3 - The Call to Ravenswood

In the quiet bungalow on Ravenswood, the clock on the microwave read 10:48 p.m.

Emma was asleep on the couch, wrapped in her favorite fleece blanket covered in cartoon penguins. Daniel had just finished carrying her drawing to the refrigerator and securing it with an alphabet magnet when his phone lit up on the kitchen island.

It wasn't Arthur Vance this time.

The screen displayed: *COLIN MERCER - VP OPS*.

Daniel watched the phone buzz against the marble counter. It slid three inches across the polished stone before he reached out and casually picked it up. He pressed the speaker button.

"Daniel Carter."

"Daniel! Thank God!" Colin’s voice was barely recognizable. It was shrill, breathy, and competed with the deafening shriek of sirens and the distant shouting of hundreds of people in the background. "Daniel, you need to get down to the Marlowe right now!"

Daniel leaned back against the counter, crossing his ankles. His voice remained as smooth as polished slate. "Good evening, Colin. Did the party conclude early?"

"Daniel, listen to me, stop playing around!" Colin screamed over the racket. "The sub-basement three chiller loop ruptured! The Apex technicians tripped the automated emergency interlock, and the server vault is hitting thermal thresholds! If those municipal financial servers crash, Meridian is liable for millions in data interruption penalties! We have forty fire trucks pulling up outside right now!"

"That sounds like a complex facilities challenge," Daniel said calmly. "Have you spoken with Marcus at Apex? As I recall from Trevor’s memo, Apex was contracted specifically because of their superior executive-tier operational capabilities."

"Daniel, they don't know the system!" Colin was practically weeping now. Daniel could hear Trevor in the background shouting at a hotel security manager. "Marcus broke the solenoid housing! It requires a mechanical key override and the manual pressure balancing protocol! Trevor says you’re the only one who holds the architectural override!"

"I do," Daniel said.

"Then get in your car and get down here! Right now! I will personally approve double overtime! I’ll give you a bonus! Whatever you want, Daniel, just get down here and stop this disaster before the media gets wind of it!"

Daniel looked down at his watch.

"Colin," Daniel said softly, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register of absolute authority that men who work with high-voltage electricity naturally possess. "At four seventeen this afternoon, you told me that my presence was incompatible with the atmosphere of the Marlowe."

"I was under pressure! You know how these events are—"

"You told me that I was being excluded because this event was for leadership, not the people who keep the building from collapsing."

"Daniel, I apologize! I am sorry! I will issue a public retraction on Monday! Please!"

"I have a seven-year-old daughter asleep in my living room," Daniel continued, unbothered by Colin’s hysterical pleading. "I do not leave her alone at night for men who treat human dignity like an expendable line item on an expense account."

"Daniel! If this company goes down tonight, you won't have a job on Monday anyway!" Colin bellowed in desperation.

"Then I’ll find another job," Daniel replied. "I have tools, Colin. I have licenses. I have certifications. What do you have when the power goes out?"

Colin choked on his words.

Before Colin could speak again, a calm, commanding voice cut in over Colin’s phone from behind him.

"Hand the phone to me, Mercer."

Daniel recognized that voice immediately. It was Arthur Vance.

There was a scuffle on the other end of the line, the sound of Colin stammering in utter terror—*"M-Mr. Vance! Sir, we are handling the situation—"*—followed by the rustle of the phone changing hands.

"Daniel?" Arthur Vance’s voice came through crystal clear, entirely unaffected by the sirens in the background.

Daniel straightened up. "Yes, Mr. Vance."

"My driver, Thomas, is sitting outside your house in an all-wheel-drive Suburban right now," Vance said evenly. "He has an accredited pediatric nurse, Mrs. Holloway, in the rear seat. She has looked after my own grandchildren for fifteen years. She will sit in your living room and guard your daughter with her life. Emma will not be left alone for a single second."

Daniel took a slow breath. "Understood, sir."

May you like

"Get your tools, Daniel," Vance said. "And put on those boots Colin Mercer thinks are so offensive. You are about to show these gentlemen the difference between wearing a suit and being a man."
