Chapter 4 - The Raid on the Gary Freight Depot

At 1:15 p.m., a dense, freezing sleet hammered against the rusted corrugated-metal siding of the abandoned Erie-Lackawanna Freight Depot on the industrial shoreline of Gary, Indiana.
Inside the decaying second-floor supervisory office, smelling of damp mold, old oil, and freezing rain, Clara Vance sat tied to a heavy steel drafting chair.
Her dark hair was matted with sweat and dirt; her face was pale as marble, bruises darkening her wrists where heavy zip-ties bit into her flesh. She was shivering uncontrollably in her thin wool coat, her hazel eyes burning with fierce, maternal defiance as she glared at the two men standing across from her.
Julian Sterling—fifty-four years old, silver-haired, impeccably tailored in a camel-hair coat beneath an unbuttoned tactical vest—stood over a portable folding table, reviewing an unsealed legal transfer deed.
Beside him stood Viktor Vance, her estranged uncle, holding a loaded Glock 19.
"Sign the non-paternity affidavit, Clara," Julian Sterling sneered, slapping the parchment against the metal table. "Your bastard child froze to death beside Alexander's dumpster four hours ago. The construction crew threw his carrier into the compactor. You have no leverage, no family, and no protection left."
Clara lifted her head, spitting blood onto the concrete floor at Julian’s feet.
"Alexander will find you, Julian," Clara rasped, her voice shaking with unyielding conviction. "And when he does, he will tear this city apart with his bare hands to put you in the ground."
"Alexander thinks he's sterile, you foolish girl," Julian laughed, raising his hand to strike her across the face. "I made sure of that seven years ago—"
BOOM.
The heavy reinforced steel blast doors of the freight depot were blown inward by four simultaneous shaped explosive breaches.
The shockwave shattered every window on the second floor, sending a rain of razor-sharp glass cascading across the concrete.
Before the smoke could clear, eight tactical operators from Moretti Sovereign Asset Protection swarmed the upper catwalks, their suppressed automatic rifles firing with surgical, lethal precision.
Viktor Vance took two non-lethal kinetic rounds to the shoulder and thigh, collapsing to the floor with a screaming wail as his weapon clattered across the rusted metal.
Stepping through the shattered entrance, dressed in an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit beneath a heavy dark wool overcoat, was Alexander Moretti.
He did not hurry. His heavy leather boots struck the metal grating with slow, deliberate, thunderous cadence.
Julian Sterling scrambled backward against the wall, pulling a small silver revolver from his coat, his hand shaking so violently that the barrel wobbled in a wild arc. "Moretti! Stay back! I am a licensed medical director! You have no legal jurisdiction across state lines—"
Alexander cleared the distance in a single, explosive stride.
His left hand caught Julian’s wrist, twisting the joint with a sickening, audible snap. The revolver dropped to the floor as Julian let out a high-pitched, agonizing shriek.
Alexander’s right hand clamped around Julian’s throat, lifting the fifty-four-year-old physician four inches off the ground, slamming his spine against the concrete wall with enough force to crack the plaster.
"My son is asleep in my bed, Julian," Alexander whispered, his slate-gray eyes burning with terrifying, absolute finality. "And he is going to grow up watching your name get erased from this earth."
Alexander hurled the broken doctor to the floor, where two tactical operators ratcheted heavy stainless-steel handcuffs around his wrists and ankles.
Alexander turned, dropping to his knees beside Clara’s chair.
With a single pull of his combat knife, he severed the zip-ties binding her wrists. He pulled off his heavy cashmere overcoat, wrapping it around her trembling, freezing shoulders, gathering her into his massive arms.

Clara buried her face in his neck, her hands clutching his back with a raw, shuddering sob that tore through the empty warehouse.
"He's alive, Clara," Alexander choked out, his tears soaking into her hair. "Our son is safe. I have him. I have you both."
