Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of Blackthorne

Within two weeks of the maritime raid, the shadow of treason that had hung over Blackthorne House and the New York shipping syndicate was systematically eradicated.

Harold Mercer’s corrupt assets were fully liquidated, his proxies stripped by executive decree, and his name erased from every corporate registry.

Julian Vance was transferred to a federal supermax holding facility to await formal grand jury indictments for forty-two counts of capital murder, maritime terrorism, and grand trust larceny.

I officially reclaimed my legal identity as Corinne Vance, assuming the executive chairmanship of the restored Vance-Sterling Maritime Consortium.

The grand ballroom at Blackthorne House—the room where three bullets had torn through my body—was completely remodeled.

The damaged crystal chandeliers were replaced by soaring skylights of clear architectural glass that flooded the room with clean, golden sunlight from the Hudson River. The heavy velvet curtains were replaced by sheer linen, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming white hydrangeas, lavender, and fresh pine.

On a bright Saturday morning in May, I walked down the grand marble staircase, wearing an elegant ivory wool dress.

Caleb sat on the living room rug, building a massive wooden castle with his blocks. When he saw me, he jumped to his feet, running across the room and throwing his small arms around my waist in a fierce, joyful hug.

"Mara! I mean... Corinne!" Caleb giggled, looking up into my eyes with pure, unshadowed happiness.

I knelt down, wrapping my arms around him, burying my face in his soft hair, feeling the miraculous, steady beat of his heart against mine.

"You can call me whatever you want, little man," I smiled, kissing his rosy cheek. "I’m always going to be here."

Dominic walked into the foyer, dressed in a sharp navy three-piece suit, his amber eyes soft with deep, unshakeable pride.

He knelt beside us, wrapping his massive arms around both of us, pulling our real family into a warm, unbreakable circle of light.

"Welcome home, Corinne," Dominic whispered.

"I am home, Dominic," I replied softly.
